I just got my father a 55" Samsung LED (seems like a bargain compared to LED prices from even a year ago) and it's quite amazing, I feel pretty lowly with my 2 year old LCD.
 
I like CRT's. We have a large Sony Trinitron TV that I bought in a thrift store for $17, and a big Trinitron computer monitor that I think ran $20. Image quality on both is outstanding from all viewing angles, and they have fast refresh rates for low eye strain.
 
I love TV, no shame here! We have a 6 year old 42" Panasonic(42PH9UK.) It's a plasma monitor, like what would be used at a trade show. It only has inputs, no tuner, which is great because you can have 4 or 5 different sources and who doesn't have cable now, anyway? You can also buy new terminals when new technologies are introduced, like HDMI. Most monitors do not come with speakers, they're a $3-400 add-on.

We bought a monitor specifically because the life of the it is rated for 60,000 hours versus 20,000 for a standard consumer model.

I'm happy with plasma because of the color, and the viewing angle is much easier on the eyes from all positions in the room. Its one drawback is how difficult it is to see when the living room is flooded with sunlight, but we rarely watch anything during the day, so it's not much of an issue.

I prefer Tv to TV :) Well, TV is a box connected to other box to display content I feed to it - that is, when I do not stare at monitor and do not read real books.

Recently I were invited to see friends home entertainment system. Plasma TV, amplifiers - separate for headphones and another for speakers, Bluray player with modchip allowing to play all DVD's, I don't even remember all the boxes. Specialty gold plated cables for wiring. We were seated in chairs positioned for best experience. What can I say? Nice to see and hear once, but I wouldn't want to have anything like at home - too complex, too polished. Damn, he even didn't allow to put a wine glass on speaker!
 
I can appreciate those who have little use for the TV... We got a pair of (about 19"?) Samsung LCD sets some years back, and mine quit working... didn't bother me, but after a couple years my wife took it in to be fixed, arguing it was useless otherwise. I admit to watching the news now and then... :) So photographic precision isn't required.
 
I have a 32in Samsung LCD TV. Samsung LCD TV are best bang for buck IMHO. They have gotten really cheap nowadays. Size of the screen partly depends on your viewing distance.

Usually I decide on the size and a budget first because that makes shopping much easier.

oh, man this friend is living the western dream;)

Ok, so for tele Samsung is best.Best phone Apple of course[ need a tablet to match].Mitsubushi for fridges.Haier for washing machines[front loader of course] Toshiba is your goto brand for laptops. And Leica cameras take the best photos so this the brand to buy.Car? well must be something from Germany of course.
There you go, all the stuff you need to aspire to own so everyone can see you are `successful '.
I voted LCD. Only because they were on sale when 30 yr old mitsubushi finally gave in.

It was probably cheaper to replace that TV than repair it, since it was a few yrs old and new TV prices keep dropping. Like digital cameras..who ever repairs those, unless its a really costly one like an M9 or EOS 1DsIII.
 
There's a bigger story here - which is how generally terrible the picture is on both plasma and LCD TVs.

I am not sure how much is the source, or the various decoders in the tuning section, but it seems the public have all been conditioned to accept compression artefects, over-sharpening and blocky skin tones.

we have a Sony Bravia, which is better than many of the others I've seen - but I still wouldn't recommend it!

The photographer's sensitive eye is not target group. :)
 
I don't watch TV. Among my social group it does seem I'm the only one without TV and cable though, so maybe I'm weird.

It would be interesting to know why the OP wants to watch a television instead of actually doing stuff?

I have an answer - after drinking coffee for years their brain cells degrade enough to switch to tea (myself including). That said, you still have some reserve :)
 
I'm still using my 10 years old Toshiba 51" CRT backpro plus audio surround equipment in a dedicated room. It is only used for LD/DVD playback. When it once will fail, I will have to start over to a new evaluation what then will be the best technology for all of my AV gear.
Direct TV watching is done by a new LED/LCD 20" Panasonic. But I only watch news, sports and wildlife documentations with it.

(because CRT is not in the voting, I selected "none of the above")
