Attitudes here on RFF

Ya gotta love these group hug threads.

Now, where did I put my bromoseltzer? 😀

(Just kidding, of course)

I am not sure about Zen but it reminds of an incident in the Mess at Cyprus. We were sat at the bar talking to one of the locals when he turned round to us and asked why it was that we, unlike all the other visiting aircrew, managed to get on with just about everybody, visitors and residents alike. One of the crew thought about it for a second and said it was because we were flying a geriatric WWII aircraft in frontline service the 90's, nobody could take the P*** out it like we could and we had nothing to prove.

Maybe it is the same with our cameras. People here are much more interested in what we can do with the cameras along with how to keep them going. The age of the camera doesn't matter, nobody seems to care about the latest bells and whistles. As a result old and new are equally cherished and there is much less "brand loyalty". As a result most peoples cups are half full rather than being half empty.

I was a rude bastard. After I got my Leica rangefinder and started hanging out here, I am very polite now. But now, I don't take any photos with my Leicas and only play them in the evening.

But the bottom line is here at RFF, the MODERATOR does his job !!!
There is certainly something to be said about that, too.

And the php software is really right (a tad heavy on a slow connection), but very nice to use. And look at.

Thank you, Joe and Jorge.

Lá breithe shona duit (That's Irish for Happy Birthday).

Thanks for some food for thought.

I know a little Irish, but it starts with pog and ends with ... well, never mind.

And I don't like anyone here. So there.

The Merry Minuet - Sheldon Harnick, performed by The Kingston Trio

They’re rioting in Africa
They’re starving in Spain
There’s hurricanes in Flo-ri-da
And Texas needs rain

The whole world is festering with unhappy souls
The French hate the Germans, the Germans hate the Poles
Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch
AND I DON’T LIKE ANYBODY VERY MUCH!!

But we can be tranquil and thankful and proud
For man’s been endowed with a mushroom-shaped cloud
And we know for certain that some lovely day Someone will set the spark off
AND WE WILL ALL BE BLOWN AWAY!!

They’re rioting in Africa
There’s strife in Iran
What nature doesn’t so to us
Will be done by our fellow man

Never more true...and it was written in 1953.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Wow, that generated a lot of responses considering I just blabbed what I was thinking...

First off, thanks for the happy birthday. It's my 21st so the whiskey mentioned above is now (legally) free game 🙂

Someone (I don't feel like scrolling up) mentioned that the overall age here is probably higher and that has something to do with the attitudes. This is certainly true. While I am not nearly as far out of high school as some here I have been mentally beyond that point for many more years. Not to say that I am more mature but rather that I never had (nor understood) the general rebelliousness (against authority, individuals, or self) that seems to plague most younger people. I've always just sort of gone with what happens rather then resist the flow of life, and that's the way I like it!

Of course I didn't always know that this was how I was. Being the age I am, I'm just starting to be able to understand myself without the bias usually associated with self analysis. This has greatly affected my goals (if you can call them that) as a photographer. I used to compare my photos to the best and strive to be better. I'd buy all of the same equipment and mimic the same scenarios, all to no avail. Now I just shoot. If I see something I take a photo of it. It's almost that simple. I say almost because I want to take the photo as I saw it, without any of my influence. That's where the RF comes in. I had a Zorki that served me well until it's death (the shutter spring basically imploded) at which point I bought a Bessa R and picked up a Canonet from my work. I just bought myself a Leica M4-2 for my birthday 🙂

On that note: I'm looking for lenses so go see my post in the 35mm classifieds forum... I had to 🙂

Any further discussion is welcome.

And plenty of big fat digital cupcakes to all of you 🙂

You keep that up, you'll go blind. Look at me, I wear thick glasses.

Jared

Oh yeah, I should add, I don't like anything with substance any more...

Bye, fellows, have fun!

It's true, the cameras choose us.

I walk into an old antique store and they just line up crying "Brian, please! Rescue us!" and "My shutter is stuck, my shutter is stuck!"

It's like the isle of misfit cameras in "Rudolf". Pick 'em up, find new homes for them. It's rewarding.

Happy Birthday.

I just hang out here for the mindless twaddle, to which I try to contribute with regularity. But if we’re going to start thinkin’ and stuff, I may have to go clean my lenses.

“The cameras choose us.” ~ Like it. Happy Birthday, Jared!

I know what you mean about feeling past all that highschool stuff...I go there every day and I'm way past all of it. 🙂

Hoist a pint for your B-day, and don't drive anywhere!

Sorry, I hate to rain on everyone's theory, but it's definitely NOT the cameras, it's the people here. Last time I checked, Leicas are also RFs. Want to have a really bad PNUT experience, go ask a question on the Leica Forum... 😱

Exactly! If you want real fun, ask about photoportunities in Cuba, which I won't answer there anymore, and the Leica crowd will go mad in an instant.

And I don't think the average age there is much below 40, if at al.

I've just been helping my farmer friends fill in their EU forms and have been rewarded with far too much cider, but - wishing Jared an extremely happy birthday - I have to agree.

Everyone here has rejected the mainstream of photographic technology. I rather suspect that most of us reject more than that. We celebrate the "twaddle" of the independent spirit and recognize it in each other. Keep it up, chaps!😀

If you think that all RF users are nice, then you haven't been to the Leica forum on the other blog. They will take your head off if you ask a simple question and do so in a rude manner. Many are extremely opinionated and address you as if you didn't know squat. I'm no expert, but I have been using Leicas since 1992 and learned the hard way about the medium - by reading, shooting, and attending photo exhibits. I attended 3 years of photog nite school and worked along side many photogs in Hollywood. So I was surprised at the viciousness.

People have to remember that photography, at least for many of us, is an art. As such, it is subject to INTERPRETATION. People need to chill out.
