California (Bay Area, Northern) Aug. Bay Area meet-up?

Glad to hear that you're gonna make it, Rich. MMMMmmmmm, gear fondling.... (he says in his best imitation of Homer Simpson)

And sorry, Allan, that you can't join in the fun. I can send you my cellphone number in case you want to check with me when your wedding shoot is over to see if we're still out and about.

Ahhh!!! No! Don't tell Allan that. He'll suggest we do one of his famous north beach all-nighters!!! ;)

Good to see that this get-together is alive and well. I assume we're still talking about August 11. If so, it looks like I can make it as well.

Rich - be sure to bring your pre-asph Summilux. I'll bring my asph version and we can do some comparison shots. Nothing like generating a little GAS among friends :D

Hey Honus. Might not be able to. Sherry has it. The aperture ring was a little loose and I sent it, and my CL, off to her for a "Sherry Krauter" special lens/camera spa treatment. She told me a few nights ago she'll have it done in about 3 weeks, so it will be close.

Her and I spoke for about 45 minutes on cameras, lenses, her knee surgery, family life, personal life histories, and what-not. She's great.

But boy, you should have heard her bash the "newer" Leica lenses in terms of quality of construction! I asked her what was wrong with the Summilux to make the rings loose and her answer boiled down to this: "Because it's a newer Leica lens!"

Well, I was thinking about being in the Mission the whole previous 24 hours, then shooting the wedding for 5 hours, then going to the Sunset for at least 30 more hours. I might be able to work some time in there... :).

Randy, if you want to PM me your cell phone, that would be much appreciated. At the least, if you are still out and about, I will get you that print that is about 1.5 years overdue from me.

Honus, it's still the 11th; we're only missing a venue. Rich, sorry to hear about your Summilux. I will have mine along, also new, pre-asph, in chrome. I just checked the aperture ring, which feels ok to me, though my Zeiss 25 feels more solid. I guess my 1960 Elmar feels better too.

Yeah, it'll be fine she says. Just needed a little maintenance. As her and I were talking about quality of construction I mentioned my DR, she said, "No THERE'S a lens that was built well!" I think anything pre-1970's she considers the better built ones.

I'm going to have to call out Photodog as well. I know you're online Martin. Can you make it? Is Tony back in town yet?

:)

I'll make it

I'll make it

Tony is out of the country for awhile. Anyone interested in taking the ferry to Sausalito for lunch? We could meet at the Ferry Building at 11am and take the noon ferry to Sausalito. Trying to park in North Beach is not pleasant.

I think I can make it. Will bring my m6 with 35/2 asph and an f30 or f31 for kicks.

Since Randy's buying, how about the Slanted Door at the Ferry bldg.?? ;)

You say I'm buying?!? Uh, gee, sorry Guy. But it turns out that each and every Bay Area RFF member is either tied up or out of town on August 11th. Amazingly bad timing, huh? Sorry we can't get together as it would have been great fun to see everyone. Oh well, maybe next time.... Okay, okay, tell you what - first round is on me. Now let's see how many actually show up to accept my offer.

I mentioned earlier that the Ferry Buildling was a good option but no takers. :)

For North Beach there's a few places I've been to in no particular order.....

O'Reilly's Irish Pub - beer and pub grub
U.S. Restaurant - Italian restaurant that's been around for awhile
Cafe Roma - coffee/cafe but I think they sell food - best coffee in my opinion in NB
Mario's - foccacia sandwiches, pizza, coffee & drinks there - might be too small
Bocce Cafe - family style Italian and accommodates groups - haven't been there in years but I think they are still there.
North Beach Pizza
Clown Alley - now called something else - burger joint that has an outside patio
Naan & Curry - Indian
Forgot the name of it but a small neighborhood cafe on Lombard just off of Columbus that sells a cafe/coffee shop and has sandwiches & salads - used to go here often when I worked in the area.
Oh and how can I forget .....there's Sodini's - another old school Italian.

I think that's it...I'll try to think of more places. There's also a few coffee places on Columbus and there's always Curly's Diner.

I'll bring my Leica M6 and 35 Summicron ASPH. Also my black Hi Matic 7sii along with some other fixed rangefinders.

As for parking, if you're willing to pay, I park at St. Mary's and walk over to North Beach. I'm lucky in that my wife's company pays for our parking so I'm set.

Sherry just emailed me and told me my Summilux and CL are finished and she's shipping today! I can bring the Summilux after all!

(have a 35/2 Biogon on the way which should be here by then too. I'll likely bring those two lenses with my MP)

Ok, got the 35/2 Biogon I bought, and my 50 Summilux back from Sherry. I'll likely be bringing just my MP with those two lenses. Unless someone is especially interested in seeing/trying/fondling/holding my 35/1.2 Nokton?

It turns out I will be out of town next weekend.

However if anyone is around this weekend on the peninsula or sf and wants to meet up, let me know. I'm curious how my 35/2 asph cron compares with the v4 pre-asph. Nothing like doing your own tests, when there's so much discussed about the differences of these 2 lenses, and so little difference I can see.

Very sorry to say that I, too, cannot join in this upcoming gathering. Turns out that next Saturday is my father-in-law's 71st birthday. Wouldn't normally be a problem except that he is in very poor health and just keeps getting worse. So, my wife and I are flying out of state to be with him on what will likely be his final birthday. I'm really bummed to miss this Bay Area RFF member gathering and feel guilty to not be able to host Guy's visit to meet the Bay Area RFF members. And this also means that I have to renege on my offer of covering the first round (although Guy did mention in a private email that he had wanted to do that so you guys may still be covered for that first round). Hope you guys have a great time and take some great pics (and be sure to get some group shots so I can enjoy the gathering vicariously).

Sorry,
Randy
