B & H Lawsuit....

I like B&H and I like Henry Posner. I think their store is neat, and I enjoyed my visit to them. I buy from them from time to time.

I'm sorry they're having these issues.
 
I once called (insert name of person from NC here) a "Goober" and just wanted to remind everyone of that. That is a stereotype that may or may not be accurate. 😀
 
I just googled gender discrimination suits and got 127,000 or so hits. Could just be a few folks at BH, who knows?. Doesn't mean the whole place is bad. How many of you buy film from Walmart? They get plenty of suits. I don't see anyone railing against their Christian beliefs. I am Jewish and I am offended by many of these comments. I thought this was Camera forum. Nothing wrong with mentioning lawsuits but lets keep it civil.
 
I will await the results of the court case as all that's known is the little blurb from the newspaper, and until its settled I will assume them innocent until proven guilty. Folks are both thin skinned these days, and quick to jump to conclusions. It's best to have patience and see how things play out. In the mean time I will continue to purchase gear and supplies from them......

Few years ago, I get this call at about 6am, with some heavy east coast accent saying "what kind of scam are you trying to pull" from an Adorama person because my cc tel. # was not the same as what they were expecting.

anyways, 30 seconds later there is a lot of cussing, then I hang up. Couple of hours later the guy calls back and apologizes, says he has to do that to everyone, and oh, by the way, do I still want the camera. I still buy from them, but try to go through amzn or google payments.

One Call will often match the east coast discounter prices, but I've had a couple of occasions of getting open box stuff from them.

I am not surprised to find this out. It is a real shame (for adorama) that Adorama's phone people are so rude. All the time the same. Offending and being offended. You need two people for that. If the offense was direct and intended it is an attack - and it openly shows the intentions (and shows the level of) the attacker. Whether the the attacked person decides to take the offense - is actually a decision (often taken without second thoughts especially if the offense was direct and "strong") and depends on how the attack was done (topic, wording, situation). Still - the offended person has the situation in hand - although the pressure is on him. The first person made a mistake - will the second person do the same one?

Sometimes we cause offense without intension - jokes are a good example. The border between a joke and offense is always on a thin ice.

Don't we learn more from a reply like "Hay man, that was not nice from you ..." more than from a reply "I hate you, ..." especially of you add your apology? We will never get on well with everyone, but the hate is not necessary. Just get over it.

I say this all as often the offense (intended or not) is often accepted as a reason for aggressive reply or even action. There is no justification for that in my view.

I know I can get hot sometimes too (for primitive reason, I confess) - but I would be fooling myself saying that I have the the right. I rather call it a choice - you either win or you loose - against your self.

... just a though ...

What about just to try to offense less and try to reply kindly (or not at all) if you get offended. Some topic very sensitive to one may be open and easy for other. I prefer friendship to hate.

Two points:

1. It's almost impossible to know what's going on in a lawsuit looking from the outside in. Gender discrimination suits are nothing new, sadly. Let's see what happens. (Here's what I think: If the plaintiffs can prove someone on B&H told them they couldn't work on the sales floor because they are female, then someone at B&H is very stupid, regardless of motivation. If religious beliefs are involved, then the plaintiffs might fairly ask if female customers are kept off the sales floor.)

2. When someone says they take offense from your words, it is better to apologize and move on to think about it, rather than to explain to that person why you think they were wrong to be offended.
 
Akiva -- A point of clarification: I fail to see how the allegations have anything to do with Christian or Jewish or any religious principles, for since when is it an Orthodox Jewish principle that women may not sell gear? I know it sounds ridiculous, but that seems to be what the issue is allegedly. BH would likely argue it has to do with qualifications.

To be clear, I have no problem with a private business choosing who works for it, when they close/open, and who is able to do a certain job or not.

I support BH by buying from them, and I have found their service excellent with one minor quibble: I think they gauge canucks for shipping. That said I think Freestyle does, too. Whatever. I can choose whether it is worth it or not.

What is "passive authoritarianism"?

I only mean that respect for the feelings of others ought to lead you to back off when someone says they take offense, rather than exacerbating the problem by telling them they were wrong to be offended. That just makes matters worse. If dialogue is important to you, then clearly you do not begin it by offending the other person, even if you sincerely believe they should not take offense. People clearly differ on what it or is not offensive language, and common sense tells us to be aware of that.
 
I was in The NYC store yesterday. I work in NYC and have visited the store a few times per month for the last 11 years. Ironically, I did notice a saleswoman behind the main counter. It's the first time I have ever seen a woman working behind the sales counter. The other women I've seen in the store are usually cashiers or work as a hostess, directing people to a specific department since the store is so big. There is also a NYPD cop posted inside the store everyday and during the holidays there is usually two cops.
