This is an update to comments I made in the thread here, where I reported banding from my Coolscan 9000, even though it is widely reported that the problem has been "fixed" in this version of the scanner. After doing some additional testing using both Nikon Scan and Vuescan software I feel I have a better handle on where the problem lies - namely the software. As suggested by starless in the previous thread, the banding seems to occur only with VueScan, but not with Nikon Scan.
Here are example crops of 4000 spi scans of a B&W 120 (6x6) negative, one using Nikon Scan 4.0 and the other using my latest version of VueScan (v. 8.6.60). Each of these was scanned as a positive at 4000 spi with the super-fine mode NOT checked. Since the banding occurs in the darkest part of the film it shows up here in the highlights of the inverted image.
Nikon Scan 4.0:

VueScan 8.6.60:

It is still true that the banding goes away (with VueScan) either by scanning at a lower sampling rate (2000 spi or less), or by selecting super-fine mode when scanning at the maximum resolution. Unfortunately there are times when I really need the higher resolution, and the super-fine mode is just inconvenient due to the longer scan time which results. When I get a chance I may drop a note to Ed Hamrick (creator of VueScan) to see if he can address this.
