Bay-I accessiories

Hi,

so far I had a couple of genuine Rollei filters for my Rolleicord, but I am using a Yashica hood. Today I got a "new old" stock B+W KR 1.5 in Bay-I. I wouldn't be surprised if this is about 20 years old.

Compared to the Rollei this doesn't fit as nicely - it is quite rough to when turning and doesn't lock in as smoothly. The filter seems uncoated while the Rollei ones, with the exception of my Rolleinar I seem single coated. Considering the reputation of B+W I wasn't expecting any of this. Anyone likes to comment.

That got me thinking, the Yashica hood's fit is a bit loose. When I got this I also tried a few non-branded ones in the shop, which fitted my camera even worse. I never had the "real thing", a Rollei one. Alse we recently had http://rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68583 recently, which seems to imply that making Rollei hoods fit Yashicas can be tricky.

This got me thinking, is there actually quite a bit of variation between the different brands of Bay-I accessories. Is it best to stick to Rollei if I am bothered? But then Rollei Bay-I skylight filters are hard to come by and Kodak discontinued E100GX.

Comments would be highly appreciated.

I have had a Bay I Walz hood that was somewhat worn and loosey goosey, and two Rollei hoods that fit snug. I think Rollei products are well engineered and tend to wear well.

I wouldn't worry about a loose fitting filter as long as it doesn't fall off. Same thing with hoods. Nor would I be concerned about single coat/multi-coat either. I strongly doubt that your Roliecord has a multi-coated lens anyway.

There were a lot of brands of cameras using Bay-1 filters and hoods. The only thing that you don't want are the special hoods for the "baby Rollie", Sawyer's Mark IV, Yahica 44, etc. that use 127 film. They're a bit different, having a cut-out in the edge of the bayonet mount and are often grey in color rather than black. They're quite uncommon and worth a few bucks. If you see one at a yard sale for a dollar talk them down to fifty cents, then put it on Ebay.

thanks for the reply. You are right that the lens on my 'cord is single coated. However to me the B+W filter appears uncoated (as does my ancient Rolleinar I). The Rolleinar II I have is definitely coated.

From a practical point of view, concerning the fit, you are most likely correct. As long as the stuff doesn't fall off ...

I have to say that not all Bay I accessories are built equal. I have a genuine Rollei Bay I hood and it will not fit on my Yashica 124G at all. But my Yashica hood fits on my Rolleicord no problem. I haven't found this problem with filters though... yet...

I've not had any flare with uncoated Rollei filters [always using a hood], and I agree some do not fit securely. I have a HACO brand bay 1 hood, and it is every bit as good as the Rollei ones.

I have to say that not all Bay I accessories are built equal. I have a genuine Rollei Bay I hood and it will not fit on my Yashica 124G at all. But my Yashica hood fits on my Rolleicord no problem. I haven't found this problem with filters though... yet...

Does your Rollei hood fit tighter on the Rollei than the Yashica hood? I find that mine tends to wobble quite a bit.

Also I am wondering whether it is slightly to narrow, since the Rollei lens is slightly wider (75mm) than the Yashica lens (80mm).

Considering the filters, a key difference might be that the Rollei filters are chromed, while the B+W is some black matt surface. As I wrote I expect the B+W filter to have been produced some 20 years ago - new products are hopefully better.

Thanks for reassuring about the coating. I am still accessing whether the coating is an issue or not.

I haven't noticed that either hood fits looser on either camera, if your hood is wobbling check inside the rim where the flange on the lens sits. There's little metal plates that push against the lens to keep it tight and you can adjust them with a small knife or screwdriver. It's not the best description but it's the best I can do without a diagram 🙂
