Like many of you, I'm always looking for cheap film on the bay. I recently found some portra for sale at a low starting price and put in a bid. The auction ended, and I see that I was outbid by another bidder. Just out of curiousity, I look at the winner and see that it is someone with a very low number of feedbacks. 24 hours later, I receive a notice for a second chance at the film with a buy-it-now at my max price (which was fortunately set very low).

What do you think, seems sort of fishy to me, maybe a shill account to bump up the sell price?

Might be, but it is just as likely that the seller rejected the high bidder for his poor feedback. Make a counteroffer at the highest bid of the next bidder after you - that would have been the price you'd have had to pay without that "winner".

There were only 2 bidders - myself and this other person. Although you cannot get much info on other bidders, the other bidder had 8 feedback, 100% positive. Nothing that would raise red flags for me if I were the seller. If 1 week went by and I received the offer, then that would seem reasonable (non-paying bidder), but 24 hours just seems too short...

I have received second chance offers from ebay on quite a few occasion and it all worked out well for me. Two of the best 2nd chance (within 24 hrs) offer for me was a Leica IIIg and Canon 7sZ.

Cheers,
