Hi,

If anyone is familiar with both the Bessa R2A and the Nikon FM2👎, will you give me a sense of the Bessa's shutter sound compared to the slap-clunk of the Nikon?

Thanks in advance,

Gus

Personally I would say about the same with the FM2 being a bit louder.

On a FM2, fire the shutter using mirror lockup (use countdown timer) then the shutter noise is par the Bessa's sound.

I owned the FM2 for a long time and the R3A for about a year (though not used much recently). I'd say loudness is about the same but the pitch of the R3A a little higher. It's one thing I'm not all that pleased with on the Bessa RF. They are certainly not loud but not nearly as quiet as a Leica, my Canonet or my Minolta AL-F. For a RF I want very quiet if I'm to give up the benefits of an SLR, not about the same amount of noise. They are simply not quiet cameras relatively speaking, they fall in the mid-range of cameras in terms of noise IMO.

I think the pitch of the sound is the issue. The sound of a Leica shutter has a much lower pitch so it blends into the background noise very well. A higher pitched sound doesn't blend. And a leaf shutter is a totally different issue. Leaf shutters are truely silent.

Try it while holding the mirror up. My FM3a shutter (mirror-less) is about the same as my R2a and R2.

I have heard that the shutter units in the FM3a and the Bessas are the same.

I am not sure if this is true or not but they sound very similar anyway.

Huh?

Huh?

Here's the familiar "one manufacturer, one product" notion yet again, another variation of the "Zeiss Ikon = rebadged Bessa" assertion, only it involves Copal and is funnier this time: the FM3A and the Bessas don't even have the same shutter speed range.

yeah, agree different shutter speed, didn't think about this.

I think what i was trying to say is that I heard they were made by the same manufacturer.
