I have only the M3 and the M6 (non-TTLwith 0.85). I first had the M3, followed 15 years later by the M6. The M3 at first felt far "more solid" than the M6, but now I love both of them. Some of you prefer other Mmodels; this is perefctly fine with me. That's why we see different models being offered over the years. As long as you like what you have, then you have your best M model camera.

The best M is the one you have with you when you need it. Having a film roll loaded is another great plus... :)

I voted for the MP, although I have an M6 classic.

BTW, the Zeiss Ikon ZM has a better VF than both of them :p

I bought an M4 as it was the only camera available locally that I could handle. All I can say is that it works very well after a CLA and gets my vote as it is the only M I have experience with. It is certainly easier to load than any of my SM Leicas, almost fool proof. As for build quality, all I can say is that it was not reassuring to have to glue back on the plastic insert on the frameline selector lever. The only thing that would improve the camera for me would be the addition of in camera metering but I can live without it. Would I buy a new M? Not very likely. It has been a nice experience using an M though and I am sure any one in good working order would so the trick for me.

I'm pretty conservative. For me the MP (new!!!) is the king, M7 comes second (when AE is needed) and M3 - my love at firs sight.

I voted for my favorite. Look to the left. There it is. However, the best M camera is the one in your hand, paid for, full of film, with a nice lens attached making photogrpahs.

Is the M7 not a fan favorite? Why did it get such small votes?

Because it's a forum for perfect heathens! Anyone with even the merest bit of class, sophistication, good breeding, aesthetic appreciation, and love for all that's beautiful in life would vote for either the M7 or the M5, or cheat and vote for both!

You'll never, ever guess which bodies I own.

The red dot, perhaps?

Aesthetically, for an AE M-system camera, many prefer the clean lines of the ZI body over L's M7. I am with those who have this preference.

I own a Leica M2, Leica M5, Leica CL and Leica MP New. I have voted for the MP New for the meter accuracy, build quality, rangefinder quality, but the distance from my old Leica M5 is very short. If possibile, i would voted also for my M5 because is very glamorous, reliable and accurate, solidly builded and smooth as silk. I love very mutch my Leica M5.
Ciao.

Also, many would claim that you need to differenciate between the M4, and the M4-2/P.[/quote]

No sane individual would EVER consider trading his/her M4 for an M4/2. My feeling is the build quality on Leica M-series cameras pretty much apexed with the M4.

I have a M2 and a M4-P. These are both great little cameras and I use them mainly when hiking in the backcountry. I use handheld metering with both and mainly shoot chromes. I notice that I use the M4-P more often now and find I'm a little protective of the old M2.

I've not tried the newer Ms, but I've envied the M6. The M6 is as far as I'd go with a rangefinder camera, in terms of technology.

I voted for my old M2. Just a lovely old beast. One day I'll get another. The money I'll save will buy film.

"Sharpness" isn't, necessarily, the most bourgeois of concepts - and neither is "grain". But both concepts have been nominated (with strong support and antecedents) and yet, now, I don't buy either.

Having looked at this again, and having noticed that there's no CL, no CLE, no Hexar RF and no ZI RF (each of which, in one way or another, might have a claim on "best" in one dimension of analysis or another) I think I'll go with a different view:

"Best" is a bourgeois concept!

Hear, hear, Mike...and since the poll is titled "Best M type camera, the omission of these cameras from the list is baffling.
