Get references. Ebay references to see track record. Make sure you get tracking and insurance or you may live to regret it. If at all suspicious forget it. There are no nice guys when something goes wrong, even if its not your fault.

I have traded with a few RFFers. What do you mean about protection...insured shipping etc? I have always traded on the assumption that each side is responsible for seeing that the item they package and send arrives. So, if I traded my MP for your M7, I would pay for the shipping etc that I want and I am totally responsible for getting the MP to your Post Office. Once you sign for it, you test it. And then if all's well, the deal is done. Same with the trading partner. It keeps the areas of responsibility rather clear.

I've never had a problem dealing with individuals. One time I bought a bunch of stuff out of an estate sale and offered to sell the 28 Elmarit over on P-net. I got an offer to trade even up for a 21/3.4 Super Angulon. The S.A. was clean as a whistle and included the hood. When he discovered that the 28 was black paint he said he felt guilty and threw in a nice clean M2 body.

Perhaps ask a 3rd party that both of you trust to act as a go-between. Will cost more because of additional shipping.

If international, tracking is a must, even if more expensive. EMS is relatively cheap. Do not declare lower value or as gift as a "term or condition". RF gears sells fast, dont compromise yourself. As someone adroitly said, "international shopping is a luxury and the buyer needs to pay what their country expects them to pay."

As Thomas said, each party is responsible for their own item to reach the other. (cost of shipping, and in case of PO loss)
As 35mmdelux said, tracking and insurance, (and even signature at delivery) is necessary.
As Fred said, there should be an inspection period to ensure both parties are satisfied, and the deal should be reversible if one or the other party is not happy, with each person responsible for sending the item back.

Not necessarily. Some shipments are "delivered", while others are "at point of origin."
With "delivered shipments" the seller guarantees the shipment to the buyers door. "Point of Origin" shipments are shipments that the seller is responsible for ensuring and proving it got shipped.

I prefer to buy and sell through the forums I frequent mostly P.net where buyers/sellers can see I have been a regular for 12 years and have good feedbacks. I would not buy something from a member who had zero posts and only registered for the sake of listing the item. There is a certain amount of risk of course. The problem really isn't about whether the package made it or not but rather very optimistic description by the seller. Pictures can be taken from angles to hide defects. I once bought a Rapidwinder from a doctor and professor from Canada who advertised it as working perfectly and scratch free. Well it did not work (needed a new belt) and had heavy heavy brassing. He argued that his description was accurate since heavy brassing are not scratches! Regarding foreign or non USA sellers, the only times when I have been screwed out of something in hundreds of transactions had been from US sellers though of course most sellers who list on US sites are Americans.

I have a brand new (1 week old) CV 35mm/1.2 chrome lens that I want to trade for a black one, which can be used as long as the glass and the rings are good. I get the feeling that the trade section of the classifieds is hardly read since it does not show up at the bottom without a bunch of clicks. Should I start a thread? How would you go about advertising my wish to trade?
