Best yashica ?

By coincidence, a young lady offered me a Yashica the other day and, because I don't follow them as much as other cameras, I looked it up and this is what Stephen
Gandy has to say:

Who is Stephen Gandy?

as far as I understand (and I may miss the point, and surely do), he is a man, responsible for price increase on many nice classic cameras :)

These days I saw 14 on "that site" with copied text from Gandy's site, word to word, letter to letter. It just missed link to original site, otherwise any camera sneaker would double bids on that camera. But they use google well, that sneakers, anyway. That's what I'm talking about. Not that such sites aren't needed, but if unknown farmer would describe how nice is Lynx 14, who would care ? But hey, Gandy has described Lynx 14, sure we need to stock up. It's like knife - it serves well every day and can hurt one by accident - should we ban knifes ? Sure, no. We should be careful with knifes and such things.

If someone is saying that we should keep what we know to ourselves, and not wise-up the uninformed, as a former newspaperman I disagree...

Not I. In the past, I have been oft accused of being too much the wisenheimer and too much the know-it-all. My need to share is often cause for much angst, mine as well as others.

what you are using

what you are using

the answer to best yashica must be the in your hands , whith film in it of course. we all strive for something we think is better but a camera is only as good as the shooter, but good glass faithful reproduction and composition . oh yes and yashica, any yashica you enjoy useing any camera that gives you pleasure come to that.:)

I hate batteries!!!!! So I will go with a Lynx anytime....
I've had a G and a GSN, and then a Lynx 5000E passed my
way and I fell in.... shock that you could have all that and more....
It's not a 14, but it's lighter an an easy walker.... It doesn't bark either....

She's no longer mine, but my fav electro :)

I have a mint Yashica Minister 111 and its great. The lens could be faster, ( 2.8 ) but the meter is spot-on and everything feels really solid as if it was carved from a solid billet. I like the shutter priority which, when a speed is selected, displays the apperture automatically in a small window. Coversley, if you select an apperture in the window, the speed is displayed on the shutter selector ring, so I suppose that it is both apperture and shutter priority? The rangefinder is reasonably bright and converging the two images is not too difficult. It has a moving bright frame to counteract paralax error. Oh yes. It weighs about the same as a small car.

I have both, the 14 and a GS(T)N.
I prefer the GSN over the 14 for it´s controllable automation , besides it´s not that big.
But optically, they both are excellent. Only problem of the 14 is that´s flare prone, and finding a 58 mm hood that doesn´t block the VF isn´t that easy.

Cheers

Ernesto

They are quite prone to lens flare and require a lens hood at all times for maximum contrast - many people who have used a Lynx 14 without a hood are convinced they are terrible cameras due to this. Kalt makes a 58mm screw-in metal lens hood that does not obscure the rangefinder / viewfinder as the rubber toilet-plunger types do.

I really like my 14, but only used it once at a concert, and over-exposed every picture. Could it be that it collects more light than other 1.4s? That actually happens, and it is a very big lens.

My lens ring is bent so I can't do what you suggest, getting this screw-in hood. Do you have any direct experience with the "plunger" types? What should I get?

Thanks in advance for any info.

The plunger types are screw-in as well, and they will block your rangefinder/viewfinder patch.

However, I have a solution for you! Watch the eBay auctions, and get a Canon S-60 metal lens hood. Don't pay too much for it, they're common and should be cheap. It is a clamp-on hood intended for the old Canon FL series SLR lenses of 50mm (I got mine for my 55mm f/1.2). It clamps on to the outside of the lens barrel of the Lynx 14 and 14e and does not obscure the viewfinder / rangefinder too much.

As to the over-exposure, I suspect that your slow shutters speeds could be too slow. I have several of these cameras, and I've had to work on the shutters of all of them - and they gum again if I leave them to sit for very long.

Hello pesphoto! Do you still have the GS that needs new seals? Are you selling it, giving it away, auctioning it off, or what? I really enjoy messing with these Yashicas. I just sold one GSN, but have another one plus two MG-1s. I've had several different Yashicas in my possession since 1970, mostly the GSN and the GTN models. Yes, they tend to be heavy, bulky but you really have to work hard at it to get a bad picture from them IMHO! I've also had the 5000, but really wasn't that impressed with it.

Okee doke... a lighter fluid perphaps?

What is your experience w/ the "Yashica glow?" I have gotten a lot of nice sparkles where there weren't any w/ a common Nikkor f1.2 (which had an uncommon price!)

I see you have the Canon f1.2, does that add glow?

Nikkor f1.2 glow, both shot under drizzle, yet bright (bw400cn)

That was my solution. However, unlike many of my fixed-lens rangefinders, I've had to do it more than once, so it seems the leaves can get gunked up again if left to sit.

Hadn't really noticed it, to be honest.

Not that I can tell. Here's two examples taken with that lens:

LYNX 14 (the normal one or the IC version), both are GREAT!!!
see this sample wide open (f1.4)

but now I prefer GL just to comfort my small hand..
optically, GL is more than LYNX imho
