Carrying two cameras is a good idea. My first time I used a Rollei 3.5F and a Tele Rolleiflex. My second time I used the Rollei 3.5F and my M6 with 75 Lux. The 75 Lux was great to isolate the subjects, especially because the subjects often acted like models and struck poses. Of course most of these opportunities happened early befor the place got mobbed.
In the next week or so I should get my M6 0.85 back from Sherry with a MP finder upgrade. I'll probably shoot either a pair of M6's (35mm-75mm paired) or my Rollei 3.5F and M6 with the 75 Lux again.

This is a bump for Saturday June 23rd for the Mermaid Parade.
Also I want to stress that getting there early, perhaps 10:00 AM, even though the parade begins at 1:00 PM, is in your own best interest. The crowds really build up fast and all the trains there are kinda slow running local.

A wide and a normal is a good combo. I'll be using my 75 Lux for isolation and reach. If you want you can borrow my 50 Lux. Shooting wide open at F1.4 is a great thing with models that will pose if asked.

Thanks for the offer, but I wouldn't want to like that lens.

I know you would like this lens. A 50 Lux ASPH is to die for. Basically a perfect lens especially made for the M9.

I'm never buying a $4000+ lens though... unless I become nouveau riche. You know that. I'm trying to get away from Leica, not buy into more.

The guy in Gary Winogrand's picture on Dealey Plaza in Dallas with his porkpie hat, cigar and loud shirt is my idol - carry an old Kodak and you will look so 1964. Too bad I can't make it that day.

We're all light!
You can dress up like a surfer-dude with a little white grease on your nose.
What...? And ---- up the film door on my Hexars? Dude?
In fact, I might leave the Hexen at home this round in favor of my Olympus OM-2n/Sigma 21-35 zoom combo for some serious WA action for a change. Was thinking about decking myself out in official MIB duds, but more likely will keep it loose and casual...unless I manage to score a good n' silly Hawaiian shirt by then, of course...

Any room in the parade for a genuine, fat tourist from Delaware? My wife and I had planned to attend the parade, and this sounds like a great way to get up close. We've booked the hotel. Where is the meet and how do I recognize the group, assuming that I qualify?
BTW, did any of you folks get to the Frieze Art Fair last weekend? We could only gaze in bovine amazement. It was a great time though.

Chip,
Registration to be part of the parade costs $15.00 per individule. I say get there around 10:00 AM and realize that the subway takes about an hour.
We should all gather around the staging area which is also near the registration booth and where the floats and cars are all lined up.
No matter what we plan it still will be an adventure. Expect big crowds. I'm very recognizable: look for a Chinese slacker dude with a ponytail and an arrogant chin beard. I' be dressed like a Hawian tourist.

So wait, you guys are seriously entering the parade and paying a fee? Ok, count me out of this meet-up. I'll just go photograph instead.

The only issue with that is that you'll fit right in on that beach. Each time I'm there I see banana hammock exhibitionists running up and down the beach with their man boobs a flapping. Not that you have man boobs.
Honestly though... I just want to photograph this event in my regular clothes. You guys have fun.

Artists by definition are exhibitionists. LOL.
The last two years I went very early and was rewarded with great shooting. The parade begins at 1:00 PM, but I figure that maybe I left around 1:30 PM because the crowds were so big that it was impossible to shoot.
I never paid for a press pass, but registration fo the event opens many more possibilities. BTW I'm trying to get my body in shape for the event. Got to tighten up the waistline a little to have a nine inch drop. I figure I have to loose five pounds.
John its O.K. to come early and just shoot the prelude to the parade. IMHO that's the best part. Anyways lots of women boobs to entertain you.

The commotion after the parade is also a nice time to shoot; all the revelers will pour onto the boardwalk and beach, making it a good moment to get some pictures up close.
Here's another June-July event I chanced upon that might serve as another meeting opportunity: Photoville 2012 at the Brooklyn Bridge Park. The part about it featuring "a beer garden where you can enjoy 'chilled brews and artisanal snacks.'" seems to bear notice for me.
