is there a way to set up a slide presentation on my old monitor but without a computer?
i have a digital frame now that just needs an sd card or a flash drive and it works fine, but it's a smaller frame than the monitor would be...

I have a LaCie external hard drive that also has a media player with various outputs (USB, HDMI) and a tiny remote control. Maybe something along those lines?

Your monitor must be connected to something that serves up the photos. If your old monitor can be connected to your home network, then it is possible. Note that a digital frame is actually a small computer.

No. You need a computer. There are very small (and cheap) computers though, like the Raspberry pi.

Edit: See here one implementation. Or here a guide for another one.

Since you already have a monitor and since I'm sure you can find a keyboard and mouse somewhere, consider an Asus Chromebox. It has a lot of features for such a small box and it even includes an integrated SD card reader. Dimensions: 4.9 inches wide by 4.9 inches deep by 1.65 inches thick. All for $164. I've got one (and a Chromebook) and I highly recommend it (for someone who already has a monitor, keyboard and mouse).

You can buy it from B&H:

You can download photo viewing apps (and other apps) -- most are free from the Google Chrome web store

i might try it with my dying macbook and see if i even like the looks of it in my living room.

Get a Mede8ter media player. Stick the photo's on a USB thumb drive and start a slideshow from the Mede8ter. Outputs to TV or monitor via HDMI or DVI. The Mede8ter is about the size of a box of decent cigars.

I used it to sell wedding shoots to prospect clients and viewing my earlier shoots on the 42-incher TV always got them:cool:
