Today there was a large book market in our city...
I have visited it, lots of books for cheap, even english ones.
You know what? I have even found Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz's "Perfect exposure" book! looks to be a good one🙂 and, for 5 euro i can't go wrong with it, anyway.

The rest are:
"Passion Justice Freedom - Photographs of Sicily" (Letizia Battaglia) , full of fantastic environmental portraits in black and white and some text, the book stinks a bit and the binding is somewhat broken but it's great inside!!
"Italians" (Gianni Berengo Gardin) - a collection of over 400 "Italian moments" in a 13x19 cm book that is really thick so a bit difficult to handle...but a lot of good images, again
"Het Fotoboek", or The Photo Book, five hundred photographers each on one page - a representative image and some text details(in dutch), really a good resource;
"B&W photo-lab Processing and printing" (Julien Busselle)...well...if i ever begin to build a darkroom, i will have some handbook for it😀
"Bravo!Bravo" (Benoit) - a funky large book with very cool etch reproductions.

Oh and I have bought a "Scotland and its whiskies" book too🙂 with many great photos and descriptions/guide to the best focusing fluids of Scotland.

I can't wait to have some time to go through these!

Any recent book acquisition from your part?

What the...? Congratulations, G'man! That's amazing! It certainly beats my $5 first U.S. edition of J.M. Barrie's _The Little White Bird_ (published in the same year as the U.K. edition; 1902).

I can see it now... hardcoverforum.com... every week we'll re-hash the old discussion about how the forum is going to the dogs (no offense) because everyone's talking about bindings and nobody lauds the joy of reading anymore. 😀

Bought one lot of 31 Photo books on eBay lately. Haven't received them yet, but dying to go through them and try to absorb a bit of knowledge.

My bargain book buy last week was "Ansel Adams and the Photographers of the American West" for $30. Probably a reprint, but the images are still very evocative, and are very reflective of a group called "f64".

My girlfriend gave me Edward Weston's first Day Book , the Mexican one of the pair. A beautiful old copy. I've treasured number two (California) since the late Sixties, and she knew it. Weston's photo deity #1 to me. A major gift, I was shocked, wept.

Contratulations on that astounding Seven Pillars find! Be sure to see Lawrence of Arabia in a theatre, if it ever returns.

My wife and I both used to be terrible about collecting books. We love reading and just kept buying and buying. Finally, after having had to move them all a couple times when we changed houses, we decided to curb our acquisitions and use the library more.

It hasn't worked completely, but we keep the home collection reasonable now. Fortunately we have access to three large library systems and it takes care of most of our interests. And it frees up more money for film ...

i am a bit afraid myself of what i will do if i have to move... to another country perhaps...

my parents have about a thousand books too, whenever i go 'home' to visit them i can find something 'new', just a bit of dusting needed. They are not the nicest looking editions, just some local editors, most of them paperback, a bit yellowed from the age, but i love the sour-ish smell of them, and what's in them, of course. Five years ago they moved to a new house, the books had to be removed from the shells, and boxed - man, those boxes were HEAVY.

i finally managed to find an ok copy of the 1988 edition of "american photographs" by walker evans. $25! much easier on the wallet. 😀

Ansel's secret

Get an International Travelall station wagon and install a platform on the roof.
Camera and Lens page 63.

Don't forget to set the parking brake. 😀

The local library is slowly getting rid of such "long haired" reading material. I try to reserve such books in advance.

A library getting rid of reading material?!? Is nothing sacred? What happens next, schools getting rid of scientific theories?

My favourite - Decisive Moment first print HCB. Gorgeous photos. Bought a complete one before the prices went crazy 🙂

I saw a series of HCB at a Barney and Not-so-noble, and almost bought it; didn't look at it because it was still wrapped. The only one in the whole shelf that was wrapped; that's why I didn't buy it. I did, however, buy a beautiful hardcover book called "One Thousand Buildings of Paris"; all shots taken with a 4x5 Sinar, in Agfa 100, many of them beautiful, but wish the size of most of the pictures were bigger (at least, say, 4x5). At $15, couldn't resist.

Hi Gabriel,

Is the one that you saw with the First Edition with the Matisse dust cover? If it is, it is very rare and in mint condition is known to fecth over US$1000. The reason I heard was that HCB didnt like the book after it was printed and stopped it. Not only that, he made sure that it was never printed again in the format of the first edition. Price aside, that book has all the famous images made by HCB and they are very well printed. A majority of them are about double letter size each.

Cheers,
Paul

I forgot.
I did score a photo book not long ago.
The Best of Popular Photography.
Has some great stuff on Leicas and Barnack.
Tons of ads and articles from the 30's to late 70's.
Another library purchase.

Dangit, I listed that book on eBay and no one bid!
