Massachusetts Boston area meeting??

Our monthly NYC Meet-Up is happening this Sunday. Generally we have a lot of regulars, and always some new faces.

Beware of the GAS though. Our meet- ups always involve crazy amounts of gear.

Cal

Good luck with your meet-up, Cal, and let us know how it went.

Our meet-up on the 27th is our first, so we don't know how it will play out wrt GAS or anything else. But I'm looking forward to meeting some of the folks who have posted some great images.

Harry

So sorry--I thought I could make it, but (incredibly) something has come up on that very afternoon that I must do. I hope to see another meet-up in the future, though.

So my plans changed... I cancelled my Tokyo trip for this coming weekend (for obvious reason) and I can attend. Do I need to send an RSVP to anyone or does this suffice if you are looking for headcount numbers. Is the date still this Sunday 3-27 in Brookline? Also what time are people getting there?

Yes we are meeting on the 27th, at around 2. I was hoping to ride my bike there, but now I'm watching the snow falling through my window, and I'm a touch less hopeful.

Sorry you had to cancel your trip...!

Excellent. 2:00 works great. Yeah, its too bad I had to cancel but there is too much risk in Tokyo right now. Also, I was supposed to go to Shanghai but they are concerned about safety as well so not going there either. However, all things considered my disappointment is very minor compared to what is going on there. I have been to Tokyo quite a bit over the years and its just so sad. I hope things don't get worse but its just so sad.

BTW, I'm told that WiFi will be available during our meeting. So, anyone who wants to showcase their work from a photo site will be able to do so.

Although we just had a meet-up last weekend, this weekend we are having another meet-up to go shooting tomorrow.

It was two Decembers ago that we first started meeting up. Meetings were consistently once a month, except for one skipped month.

Have a great meet-up.

Cal

Nice about the wifi, Harry!

And Have fun with your shooting meet up, Cal. Where are you headed to go shoot?

Looking forward to meeting everyone on Sunday.

My son has plans for me on Sunday, so I am sad to say I will not be able to make the trip to Boston this weekend.

Have a great day guys.

We are heading to Willets Point in Queens by Shea Stadium. Its kind of a forgotten area that is falling victum to eminent domain. There are dirt roads and these tiny garage shacks where automotive repair takes place. Kinda looks like/resembles a place in the third world.

Queens New York is likely to be the most ethnically diverse place on the planet, yet seems to be off the beaten path when tourists come to New York.

I live in Long Island City, Queens, one subway stop from Madhattan, but about a 5 minute walk from my house is a vast uninhabited abandone industrial area that displays urban decay and neglect. After 6:00 PM more trains go by my house than cars and there is this gritty tone and filth that reminds me of an Edward Hooper painting. LIC is a place where many strip clubs relocated when Mayor Guiliani cleaned up Times Square; it is a place where I can get the bus to Riker's Island; it is a place where Prisioners from Rikers are released; yet my house is located next to a terrorist target, the CitiGroup Skyscrapper, the tallest building on Long Island. I do a lot of urban landscape near my house in medium format that displays profound lonelyness.

What kinda work do you do?

BTW I have found many of my friends from the meet-ups to be not only a support group, but also a source of inspiration. We have a lot of talent.

That place is amazing... I wish I could join you! I've found myself there, by hook or by crook, a couple of times ;) But sadly, never with a camera. When is it going away?

I lived in Astoria for a short while, actually, though it was my second home for longer than that. Right off the park, under the ever-present Hellgate Bridge. I took some epic wanders through Queens when I was there a lot.

I teach an art of relaxation and self-defense, and I have a school for it here in Boston. Though I think my new full-time job is small human-calmer... I've now sat down three times to finish writing this reply. I suppose I should wrap it up before she finishes eating and I'm needed again!

There is no definate time line, and I'm not sure what the banksters and developers have in mind, but the papers have been filed. As you know, its always the powerful winning over the powerless.

The number 7 train runs right in front of my house, and the Citigroup skyscrapper is in my backyard BTW.

P.S. I think I remember a shot of yours that you posted long ago. It was the underside of the Tri-Borough bridge by Astoria Park in B&W. If this is you, its a great shot and still memorable.

I don't think it was me... I really don't know where my negatives from those days have gotten to. I have an under the Manhattan bridge shot which I quite like, but no under the Tri-Borough.

I think it might be odd to start posting NYC pictures in a Boston thread, but that gives me an idea for another thread...

Hope the meeting went off smoothly. Woke up today to a sick wife, and a consequent need to watch the kids, so I wasn't able to make it. Next time, hopefully.

Harry,

I do hope your wife recovers quickly; that's important.

The meeting went very well, and the venue was good. Probably the first time there was ~$50K sitting on a table at the Beacon St. Tavern. Talk about GAS!

Hope to see you next time.

Meeting was really fun. Sorry we missed you today. As you said, maybe the next time. I hope we all meet again. It was fun seeing everyone's gear! Gear on hand included:

- Two Yashikas
- Leica MP
- Leica M7
- Leica M3
- Leica M8's (x2)
- Nikon RF (Cant remember the model but it was neat)
- Whole bunch of lenses including Canon, Leica, Zeiss, and CV
- Almost forgot... Harry brought a Thumbs Up that I got to try on my M8... yep definitely buying one of those now. Thanks Harry! LOL

Also, Harry brought along some very nice prints he had made. Overall I had a really fun time talking cameras, backgrounds, trips, technique, etc. The other patrons must have thought we were nuts when everyone starting pulling out one or two cameras and a host of lenses... LOL I think it added to the fun. Anyway, BIG THANK YOU to Harry for setting this all up! We should definitely do this again. Also, if anyone is interested in a Boston photo outing I am definitely interested in tagging along.

Regards,

Kevin

P.S. I didn't notice who won the door prize?

Yes–a very nice afternoon. Sorry your wife is sick, Harry–hope she's better soon.

I am definitely up for another meeting. Now that the weather's improving we can go out shooting, sometime for sure. It would be fun to pick somewhere a little different–I don't know if there's anywhere around here as neat as Willets Point in Queens, but I'm sure we can find something.

Thanks again Harry for organizing. See you all soon!
