So, needed a cheapy cheap scanner for making digital contact sheets. Thinking was I'd use it to catalouge/make small previews for the next year then buy a scanner for when I get my coffee table book made - for family and friends only, give me something to aim for.

So I bought a Summit Photofix SP5. It was £99, and it's incredible. 5MP, instant scans. You can use it stand alone, it comes with a battery and SD card (1gb) so you can take it travelling. Or you hook it up and use it as is. The results so far seem great. I'll post a demo in a bit, just going through the girlfriends stuff.

If anyone needs something quick and cheap, this is really actually very good. Mac and PC.

Oh, also, you can really see the difference between digital and film, even when scanned on a £99 scanner. I'd forgotten.

Spoke too soon. It's ****e :D But it will do for it's original purpose.

I will shuffle off silently and curse myself.

I'm gonna go for the Plustek 7600SE i of AI i scanner and multi-pass the hell out of everything. The first scan looked great on this baby scanner, so I was happy.

Then everything else looked like crap. They aren't in focus even!

That is an example, I sharpened it and played with levels and contrast, then shrunk it so you can't see the blur and the strange little blurry squares that look like the pixels! Doesn't look too bad after a fiddle, it may do for proofing after all? Opinions?
