bought some hc 110 today

strolling past the the ever smaller darkroom section at my local pro shop this morning i spotted a neat row of kodak hc 110 and on impulse grabbed a bottle.

in my film bin i have hp5, delta 100 & 400, fp4, and now the gekko 100 & agfa 400 apx.

any words of wisdom for me?

Use dilution H.

I have never used HC-110, and don't even know what diluation H is, but every post I ever read on PN or apug seems to recomend H. "H" apparently stands for "Ansel's preferred diluation" or something like that 🙂

I think HC stands for high concentration. Brilliant with HP5+. Member GeneW is a master with that combo.

HC is my second favorite only to Xtol.

Try dllution G or H, can't remember which one, but it is the one that is exactly TWICE the time of dilution B.

I usually use 5ml original syrup to bring to 250ml working solution. One shot. Lasts a long time and gives very nice tonality with Tri-X.

I've been interested in trying other developers... but first I must replenish my D-76 stash and learn more about it. All this talk about dilutions sounds like Greek to me. Only recently did I dare to use D-76 diluted 1:1 and the results weren't disappointing.

Holy crow, Kovacs' shot is terrific! I had sorta given up on HP5+; now I have to reconsider. ... and just when I had "decided" to standardise on Tri-X/Rodinal.

One question: Joe, how have you exposed the HP5? Box speed? My experience with HP5+ in the past, as with Tri-X, is that exposing at around 200 is beneficial, especially with high-dilution developers such as discussed here.

I rate HP5+ and APX 400 @ 200-250. I often use dilution B but I'm starting to favor dilution H. Just to let you know I have "soft water".

HP5+ dilution B it for 5 min @ 20 degrees Celsius (double time for dilution H).
APX 400 dilution B it for 6 min @ 20 degrees Celsius (double time for dilution H).

Gene's work using hc110 at 1:100 was a major reason I tried it. Works great with HP5 and FP4.
