Godfrey, most of the cars manufacturers now offer this very convenient feature actually... 😉

Of course if you shortcircuit the battery on purpose with a long wrench, you'll win the battle ! 😀

Hmm. My buddy's brand new Dodge truck shuts the lights off a few moments after he locks the doors by default. But if he turns on the interior light before he opens the door for some reason, and forgets to turn it off before he locks the doors, the light stays on and burns down the battery.

Ask me how I know this for a fact. 🙂 (Oh yes: My sixteen year old Merc does the same thing...!)

These little automated conveniences are nice touches. But if a device doesn't have them, it makes no sense to go all melodramatic about how horrible the thing is because you didn't care to learn about that fact before you bought it.

I see this as a feature not a bug.

I turn auto shut off to off on my M9 because generally I want the camera to respond immediately. If I'm shooting it's on and in my hand. If I'm not it's off and in the bag.

Have I left it on and ran out the battery and missed a shot? Yes, it's something you do exactly once. Then you become more mindful.

It's very funny that a camera obviously geared toward enthusiasts who don't even want a screen, need an auto power off. There's what, one dial and one switch on the camera plus the shutter and the aperture ring. How hard is it to turn it off?

Well sidestepping the actual subject of the thread, I can only assume the M6 does something vaguely similar (such as sleeping the meter after a certain period) because as I said, the batteries (which have already lasted several years) appear to have survived with the camera 'on' for the last few months.

Now we can step back and let the digital crowd fight it out for the rest of the thread. 😎

I'm sure you're right, as my M7 auto shuts off too, but a tap of the shutter button brings it back to life.

My Leica MDa is always on, no matter what. Or is it always off? Hmm.

Back to digital - I always turn off my M when not in use. Force of habit and easier to deal with than buyer's remorse.

Yay! Mission accomplished! Isn't this fun, y'all? Takes me back to the good ole M8 days! The Leica basher vs. the fanboy game is such good sport.

On a serious note, of course, this can be fixed with a firmware update and the option of auto-shut off (not) easily accomplished with the command button and dial.

If Leica was to confirm that such an update was forthcoming and provide a firm release date, I might reconsider dumping it in favor of the 262 I already own. Any mention of this on the L-forum?
 
I always hate when my X100 turned itself off and I want to take a pic - but then again I forget to shut it off 50% of the times so I'm glad it has that feature so I do not even need a spare battery for it.

So how is it that your battery died after 5 days and less than 25 exposures? Did you leave it on in your camera bag for those 5 days? Was it from walking around with it for only a couple of hours and it died?
 
As a new buyer of a LEICA MD S/n 4987529 I am writing Leica to implement an AUTO SHUT OFF after something like 1 hour with no action on the shutter.
I urgently ask all of the new buyer to do so, as we need to have a firmware release quickly to solve this issue.

The MD drain the batterie around 10 pourcent by hour. thats OK. WITH AN AUTO SHUT OFF MODE!


YES , it is an issue. this MD is my eleventh LEICA M (I am not a colector, I jusk keep the last one)
I left all of my leica ON except when they are at home on the shelf.
From the M6/M6j, three M7, M8, M9 , two M240 I had no issue with this.

Of course, on the digitals, you have to put back the switch off-on to wake it up, and lost 2 second, BUT YOU HAVE BATTERY REMEANING FOR THE REST OF THE SHOOTING.

I am doing some street photography, and leaving the camera make sens...around my shoulder, you never know when you will have an interesting subject...
But each 10-30 minute you press the sutter slightly to test a composition or the light.
Camera go on stby after 2 minute ( the MD do)....that's ok
you wake it with a touch.

If you don't do so after one hour, everybody will understand that the thing went to off automaticaly.

The MD IS ALL ABOUT PASSION, experience on the M, and LIBERTY.
Not for everybody, but for few who were waiting for it since the M8.

LIBERTY is seriously attacked ( sorry It's not my mother tong) when the camera is battery DEAD.

I could not put my camera off after each picture in the street....so please LEICA
PROVIDE THE MD OWNER AN AUTO SHUT OFF MODE AFTER (..... 30 mn....or 1hour)

how long does it take these Leica digitals to wake up? My Pana GX7 takes like a second and my Canon 6D is instantaneous, i assumed it would be instantaneous given the cost etc. 😕
