Here's the thing about the potential for Leica to offer auto shutoff in a subsequent firmware update -- they likely wouldn't be able to offer a user-adjustable auto shutoff because of the camera's limited controls and no menu, so what arbitrary time period should they choose? 10 minutes? 30 minutes? 2 minutes?
I wonder if there's a happy medium between preserving battery life yet maintaining the 'instant on' of the camera? At what point to the scales tip the balance one way or another?

My Sony NEX F3 took more time to wake up then to turn on. So, I made sure I turned it off every time I wasn't taking pictures - I still do this with my A6000. It is easy and you can get used to it quickly. So, no, it is not an issue (he said while unwilling to spend that much money on a camera).

Amen to that. But speaking of features, can I say (unmelodramatically) that I can't see how folks would pay $6K for this camera when their own digital M allows them to simply turn the LCD off? I sure don't get this camera and what seems to be its costly and purely psychological feature. Of course, I didn't get the MM either and now I own one (which, incidentally, I use with the LCD turned off).

the MD has a stby mode after two minutes. the frameline and light mesure shut down and you need to slightly press the shutter to wake the camera back....i will say in 0.5s.
in this stby mode the camera batterie is draining 10 pourcent per hour.
The auto shut off we need is the complete Off...IE no DRAIN.
Of course after it activate, you will need to put the on/off switch quickly to off than on to restart it (1s average depending of the size of the card)
I suggest 30 minute of 60 minute for this auto off , whatever they want, but something.
( 30 min or 60 min without touching the shutter button)

Precisely I pay 6000k to replace my original M with this MD because it DOES NOT ALLOW me to turm the LCD ON.
Just a change of perspective....we know that in photography, no ?
nor to erase any picture...
nor to show any picture to any body...

Looks like it's been fixed with a firmware update. Auto shut-off after 10 minutes. Great.

I tested the updated firmware overnight -- basically turned the camera on at 5pm yesterday and left it on until 5am this morning. When I started it yesterday, the battery read about 60%, and when I looked at it this morning it read 50%.

That's what it's supposed to be. It's kinda hard to tell by just looking in the viewfinder -- prior to the firmware update, the meter/display would turn off after 12 seconds anyway.

10% drain over what should have only been 10 minutes? Does that seem right?
Assuming the previous night's test was from a full battery, that's about a ~3% drain per hour. For 10 minutes, I feel like you should have woken up to ~59 or maybe at least 58% remaining. Obviously, 10% drain is better than 40%, but I always thought the auto-off was fully off?

A bit strange.
If the "firmwared" auto shut-off thing works properly, this tells that there is some "natural" battery drain even when the camera has been turned off.
Could you repeat the operation with manually turning the main switch to OFF with a battery reading 60% at 5pm and looking at the results at 5am ?

I certainly can try it again -- it's entirely possible that at 5pm yesterday it was on the cusp of 60% and it rolled over to 50% in that 10-minute interval between being in standby mode and auto shutoff mode. But sure, I can give it another go.
BTW I just turned the camera back on (11:10am) and it's still at 50%. Actually, I'll leave it on and check it later today. I will report back!
