Breakfast anyone…. Post yours

I'd really glad this topic has come up because it's very dear to my heart, so my apologies for responding far too seriously. Also, no photos I'm afraid cos for some years now I've found it difficult to post photos, not having a negative scanner or hosting site.

I mention what follows in some detail because I wish I'd known about this type of breakfast/ lunch when I was much younger, and readers here might be interested. It tastes fantastic and is very sustaining. It's very healthy too, especially in the light of modern dietary and fasting research.

For me, breakfast is literally breaking my fast because from 8 pm, or a little after, I don't have any calories at all until 1 pm, a sort of semi-fast, every day. Thus an early morning hot drink is always without milk. Then I have a meal that I really look forward to even though, oddly enough, I only start feeling hungry when I begin to eat. It's amazing the way the body gets used to a daily short fast. It's very easy to do. For those who have to get up very early the breakfast time can be brought forward to give a fasting time of at least 16 hours. I know it's easier for me cos I'm now retired but the meals can easily be put into a packed-lunch form and taken to work.

The meal varies slightly according to what I've got available, but hopefully it's six quite small courses –

A few cherry tomatoes, green olives, Sicilian- style cherry red peppers stuffed with cream cheese, and occasionally a slice of ham and a little falafel and hummus.

One or two eggs: scrambled, soft boiled, fried in olive oil, hard-boiled or omelette,

As many different mixed nuts and seeds as I can get, all mixed up with 5% fat Greek yoghurt and some mixed berries usually blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. Great for gut health.

A few slices of cheddar or blue vein cheese with some walnuts, sometimes with half a slice of seeded sourdough toast and some salty butter, although apart from this and occasional treats I usually manage to avoid bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, biscuits and pastries (most of the time!).

Half an apple and half a banana.

A few squares of 70% dark chocolate.

(As an extra health option I usually have a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil - followed by a teaspoon of peanut butter to compensate for the taste. (Unfortunately really tasty olive oil is far too expensive here, a rip-off).

I drink decaffeinated tea and coffee in the day, decaffeinated cos it's recommended by my hospital following successful prostate cancer treatment.

It lasts me until dinner at around 6 or 7 or even 8, when I have a little fish or chicken and some mixed low-carbs vegetables and the remaining halves of the apple and banana.

As a result of this eating and daily semi-fasting regime my total cholesterol less HDL dropped by 27% and my triglycerides over HDL ratio is now quite low (great for me cos I'm intolerant of statins, impossible to take). I had become prediabetic but my HbA1c glucose level has now fallen to be easliy within normal. My body inflammation level as shown by the C-reactive protein score is low and my BP average over 14 days is stable at 120/75.

I know it may seem like an obsessional health fanatic's regime I'm not like this, and it just works for me - and my wife. Delicious. And we break the rules a bit to have special treats and to eat at great restaurants.

Bon appetit!
