Breaking in the M6..

Great work... You've made superb atmosphere shots and have created a great feel for this place. Some of the simpler compositions work amazingly well because of the attention you had to composition. The lamppost is a perfect rule of thirds. The car around the circle is a good interpretation of the Fibonacci spiral. I usually don't look for these things, but your ability to turn the banal into something quite nice had me looking. For info on the Finonacci spiral, check this out with the link at the end of the blog entry. http://aphotocontributor.typepad.com/aphotocontributor/2008/10/the-golden-ratio.htm

funnily i have the same setup..M6-TTL with UC-Hex but i must be doing something wrong.

brilliant work and all the best with your course!

Really nice work Jamie.
It seems we've just missed each other, I finished my course over at CCB a few months ago and have now moved up north.

I really like this series (or what I have seen of it, my internet is ludicrously slow tonight), although some of it may be down to nostalgia.

PS if you haven't already you must check out Snoopers Paradise and the North Lanes Flea Market for photographic esoterica!

Well done, Jamie. I think the choice of one camera, one lens and one film was helpful. You eliminated unnecessary decision-making and concentrated on developing your eye and your vision. Keep up the good work.

Wow Jamie, those are really great shots. Nice atmosphere, and to me you have a way of drawing out the emotion and humanity of the people you photograph. Those people shots are the style that I would aspire to.

Is that Brighton City college or something similar? I am studying at Brighton University in Grand Parade. Have to say I absolutely love Brighton - such an awesome city! (and snoopers paradise is a ridiculousl shop - could spend hours in there!)

Anyway, Thanks to everyone for the kind words, I'll let you all know what grade I get as I have my final project review tomorrow aha!

Is that Brighton City college or something similar?

That is indeed City College. I wasn't sure at the time whether I wanted to invest three years and a lot of money into a BA course, so I did a BTEC there for a year just to learn some new skills (colour darkroom printing, LF photography etc). I still haven't decided about uni...

I was a student at Brighton in the 1980's. Glad to see student life seems to have hardly changed since. Just wish I had a set of photos like these to look back on.

...

At least "analogs" are bleary eyed from the right reason, celebrating the end of a project in the pub with too much beer and too many cigarettes!

...would a nice cigar do as well, Tom? :D I don't smoke cigarettes (never have)

Jamie, very good work, thanks for sharing and welcome to the M world! :D

Jeez, Does everyone in that school smoke? I have two children in two different universities here in the U.S. and I can't recall seeing anyone smoking in the past 4 years that I've been at the schools. I know a few must be smokers, but your shots make it seem like everyone is smoking all the time!

P.S.- I'm not an anti-smoking zealot, I enjoy cigars and my wife smokes cigs, but the kids don't.

Fantastic work - I love it!
Also love the other series on the site - Bright Lights, Big City is particularly impressive, and I generally don't prefer colour photography!

Well done.

Well it does seem at Art school alot of people smoke, plus from being half american myself it seems that kids at university seem to drink/smoke/etc alot more in the UK - perhaps because of lower age limits.

Fine by me because it leads to interesting photo opportunities!

Thanks for all the kinds words everyone!
