BREXIT: UK members might want to consider GAS before the June 23 referendum

I just heard Nicola Sturgeon's speech at the radio, she seems determined to keep Scotland into the EU and she doesn't rule out another referendum on the matter.

That will be interesting: the UK survived to WWII but might collapse because of this vote, I think Boris' supporters are claiming victory too early, perhaps we may see a united Ireland soon too.

i say huzzah! huzzah! huzzah for the UK! the pound will recover. the london naysayers will be proven wrong - again.

A bit like Alabama leaving the USA, Paul. Maybe you'd be for that 😕

Personally I think a US of E would be a good place to live, but I now know I never will (though I'll vote to keep Scotland in the EU and out of the UK if I get the chance). But the cause of European unity will be set back by the Little Englanders' historic gamble

Jim: I really do not know where to start to think about our country and it's mad moments. Cameron did this to prove a point within his own party.

I was shocked when I read the news this morning.

And today this Farage guy was asked if they now keep their promise to put the 350 Mio Pounds per week into the health care system. He answered that they can't and that they never promised this. That was fast, that they admit that their campaign was built on big lies.

Two relevant things may happen in the next 12 month:

- GBs economy is severely damaged. Then other countries might think about it if they really want to have a leave-referendum.
- GBs economy is only going down slightly or is even stable. This gives exit-advocates in other countries a boost.

GB already lost it's AAA credit rating today. They had this rating only because of the EU in the background.

Thrilling weeks are coming.

I think you guys should get out of the UK as soon as possible, and Salmond is right: if you remain in the EU and offer the same fiscal conditions London offers now to the EU people all that money flow will go up to North and you'll become filthy rich!😀😀😀

Well, we have already seen a lot of BS in this thread, starting from the poor Lithuanian farmer ruined by the Brussels dictatorship so I am not surprised, as I already wrote the European governments like yours should try to get an advantage out of this, the first step would be to kick out the UK immediately, raise custom duties and then "invite" the European investments in the UK to return with a better tax rate.

At the same time the French government should offer a tax discount to those French citizens who moved to London to get a better taxation...then they can leave Farage and Johnson enjoy the victory with the large Muslim population of the East End as they prefer them to the Europeans.

The real point is not about the UK being a member of the EU at any cost. The real point, was to keep the UK at the table, in order to help reform the EU in a more libertarian style, and reap both the benefits of cooperation and of efficient economy. We all know, it does not make any sense for Britain to go it alone in a world of 7 bio people. What has really been defeated is the hope, that people can use reason and empathy to overcome tribal rites. It looks like it is still too early to count on that. In a way, this has been confirmed by the age analysis: the youngest voted overwhelmingly to stay and the oldest to leave. This is Alzheimer's revenge...

Seriously ... chill! The balance will be restored at some point ... you lot have been through some pretty incredible events over the years and have always pulled through ... WWll comes to mind.

With respect, that's not really the point - for me, at least. It's actually about symbolism. I wanted to be part of the EU because I believe in internationalism.
The hostile - and at times, bellicose - attitude that some of our politicians (and our population-at-large) have displayed, in recent years, towards foreigners, has been shameful. Sadly, it has become increasingly embarrassing to be British (or more accurately, English) these days. It gives me absolutely no pleasure to write these words - it's simply how I feel about it.

Thanks a lot for this, Marek.

I would add : that was the youngest and most urban vs the oldest and most rural. Not very surprising. And a very sad situation, for everybody. Years ago people were moaning about a possible Grexit and at the end of the day we all came to the conclusion that this wasn't possible. Now, a real Brexit happens. Pheew.

Farage is a dumb individual, but he's the tree in front of the forest, as we say here on the other side of the Channel.

Me thinks GB will be just fine from now. Comments about EU suddenly pretending it doesn't exist, or even harm it's commerce are not realistic. Money knows no creed nor country. Politicians will shuffle back and forth and deals will be done. British talent and knowledge will be just in demand in future as it was before.

It's a serious look-in-mirror point for Brussels elite. No doubt others who haven't been exactly happy about union dare to voice their opinions now louder.

I am desperately sad and disappointed by the result. I feel that leaving will be a massive backward step, not only for the UK but also for our European friends and probably for the world in general.

embarrassed by british (english) independence? 🙁

That's the mistaken point right there Paul. We are not independent. We are utterly dependent on foreign trade in EU and investment from the world. That EU has been rejected and the foreign investment would be silly if it did not look elsewhere to invest.

Of course, in the end, all will be OK. It is so nice to find countries in Europe that have their own characteristics and traditions and flavor. Boxing all into one EU has its costs.

I agree with your second point. As to the first, the UK has now saddled itself with an increased cost of doing business - money might not know creed or country, but it does know risk, and it puts a premium on that; hence the AAA downgrade, which raises the cost of borrowing to service debt. The GBP devaluation increases the amount of debt to be repaid, as has been already mentioned.

Now, the whole world knows that the UK needs to make trade deals, placing it at a negotiating disadvantage. Not a good position to be in.

The UK's strength is its intellectual capital and capacity for innovation. I sincerely hope the UK makes the most of its strengths to overcome the initial obstacles and build a new future for itself.

My hope is that politicians everywhere will do this. You see folks being fed up over on this side of the pond with our election.

Best of luck to the people of the UK. Perhaps the EU will look at this and make it better for all members and better enough that the UK will rejoin.

the UK stood on its own hind legs for a long, long time. why not now? i just do not understand the hand-wringing. then again, maybe i do ... 🙂

Yes, as an imperial regime that established dominance through coercion and extreme violence. I've repeatedly seen in the rhetoric of the pro-brexit campaigners a nostalgia for the empire of past, never mind the fact that it was a global humanitarian/ethical catastrophe.

UK will not be fine from here on, not for a while at least. Banks are globally bracing themselves for the UK economy to fall through the floorboards, the pound fell to it's lowest in 31 years in a matter of hours, value of UK banks have dropped significantly more than the pound has.
