Bruce Gilden on tough guys, Obama, and his cats.

Thank you Bonatto - a really interesting insight into the mind of one photographer who's not afraid to speak his mind - both with his photographs and when interviewed. Good stuff.

Gee, he is even worse than I thought.....

He says: "I do prefer people who are—even if I don’t like their politics—who say what they’re going to do, even if I can’t stand it, like Bush (W.). I couldn’t stand him, but at least he said he would do this, and he did it. I don’t like Obama. " Okay, he doesn't like politicians, a lot of people do. But why in the world did he photograph all the New York City mayoral candidates for the New York Times Magazine? Even worse, he "liked all of them on a one-to-one basis. Some more than others. But they’re politicians." What the ? He likes them but dismisses them just because they're politicians? Gilden is a hypocrite, sorry.

Gilden is a hypocrite, sorry.

I'm not sure i agree with that. He photographed politicians yes but he doesn't pretend to like them. Also i suppose you could find people ok on a one-on-one basis, it's collectively that they're messed up.
He does have a "tough guy" side that gets a little annoying I'll give you that, but I like his directness, there's too much BS in this field anyway

And he's the biggest source of BS.

What makes you say that ?
Not being sarcastic here, I'm really curious, because sometimes I feel I'm just about to call BS on his stuff, but then, I'm not so sure anymore.

Sometimes I'm really convinced that he has a human face behind all the "my dad was a gangster, I'm so tough I live in NY" facade

I think we've rehashed the Gilden argument here too many times. The guy is a self-publicist much more than a photographer, and talking about him just gives him more publicity for his antisocial and mediocre work.

'empty vessels make most noise.'

No one has a bigger mouth in photography world than Bruce "tough guy" Gilden.

Guess. Its that time of the month for the Gilden thread.. At least once a month, he's great, he's an ahole, yadda yaddan yadda..
Kind of like Groundhog Day..

Somehow I've managed to miss this part of RFF culture :D

Well I'm not saying he's great, I don't like his photography and I don't agree with everything he says, I do like how direct and opinionated he is. If in fact he really is direct and not just hiding behind big words
