Pretended Artist
I got bored with the interview as soon as Bruce began talking about himself too much.
Does that really matter? JMHO but my answer to that question would be NO. When I photograph for myself, I photograph for myself - not for others.
If I am photographing for a paying client, that is another matter. What they think of the photos they have paid me for does matter.
Noisy, I agree with your points, but it's not what I meant -- maybe I didn't fully express my thoughts. When I'm shooting for myself, yes I'm doing it for myself. But, like a conversation between me, myself, and I, at some point I need to share. And sometimes, because I spend so much time on photography, I question what I'm doing. And others are a part of that -- be they friends, family, society. And if there is some acceptance of ones photography it can help finance more work. There are costs involved. Even someone as well known as Bruce Gilden is concerned and in his late 60's can't coast -- and that says something. If he talks about himself -- well isn't that the point of an interview? 🙂 I'm rambling...

Looks like Bruce is having fun, earning a living taking photographs.
The folks in Magnum are a tough and highly experienced crowd, and they are the ones who get to decide who is invited to joins their number.
If one casually dismisses any Magnum member's corpus of work (Gilden's very much included), one is probably making a foolish mistake.

A foolish mistake of the sort one makes when they point out the emperor isn't wearing any clothes.
No need to go to Youtube, just hop over to the gallery here on RFF. Someone takes a good street or landscape photo they get maybe 10 to 50 views. Someone else post a photo of a nude female then it's in the hundreds. If you want likes and followers and all the other bs of social media, then take photos of sexy women, nude women, sexually provocative photos of younger women, anything to do with sex and implied sexuality.
Look at the main page of youtube, look what is it that billions are watching and you get a sense of humanity, its taste and how much people care about 'art'.
