Do I really need to cut the leader to that shape if I'm loading film into an M6? It seems like the straight film cut should be fine. Am I right?

I've managed to load film into a Leica IIIc without needing to cut the leader, but the Leica Standard requires the leader to be cut.

Go out and try it on your M, you'll find out in moments whether you need the leader or not.

If you are talking about the 4 inch cut... no.. For the M6 I cut a small leader which makes loading easy for me.
The straight cut should work fine.

Yes. Cut the width in half and 6/8 sprocket holes back. Use small scisors so as not to make a jaged cut on the curve up to full width that will make a place for a tear to start.

My scisors have 1 inch long blades and are the best for cutting film when you are done.
