Buy a summar?

I really like the soft look, but I also wanna keep my radioactive cron, and I will definately regret selling it. Should I just find a cheap one to play with it?

Keep your 'cron, lightly smear some petroleum jelly on the UV filter and it will approximate a heavily scratched/hazy Summar.

Don't angst over lenses, keep on putting your ideas into pictures :)

I have one and it is wonderful. every other summar I've seen produces horrible results, seriously. No idea how this happened.

Do you need Summar or someone else said that you need it?
Again, will you regret selling Summicron, or someone else said that you will?

I have both the collapsible 'cron (non-radioactive) and a Summar. Both in pretty good condition. They both see a lot of use on my IIIf; very different aesthetics and ergonomics. I wouldn't get rid of either.

Generally, Summars are phenomenal portrait lenses. Really beautiful things. It's tough to find a good one, but well worth the hunt.

My collapsible Summicron is the most painterly, soft/sharp of all twenty of my Leica lenses. I tried a Summar. It goes too far in the direction of softness and flare. I sold it and bought a second Collapsible Summicron. Now I have one in Ltm and one in M mount. Take it from me, don't waste time and money trading gear. You will regret selling the Collapsible Summicron!

Let me offer you a definitive course of action:

- You should buy a Summar.

- You should then sell the Summar.

- You should sell your Summaron.

- You should then buy a Canon 35/2.

- You should buy another Summar, in nickel this time.

- You should sell your CV 21/4.

- You should then buy a Super Angulon.

- You should then sell the second Summar.

- You should then sell the Canon 35/2.

- You should then buy another Summaron, but a 35/2.8.

- You should buy a third Summar, coated this time.

- You should sell your Leica III.

- You should buy a Leica M3.

- You should then sell the second Summaron.

- You should buy a third Summaron, this time with goggles.

- You should sell the collapsible LTM Summicron.

- You should then buy rigid M-mount Summicron.

- You should sell the third Summar.

That should get you through the next two years or so without having to think about gear. Now you can go out and shoot without the difficult questions of what gear to buy and sell interfering with your concentration.

And stop thinking gear and enjoy what you have. You should know selling is not so easy. Cheers.

Both give that different look, i'd say get both, hardly go wrong with getting more, besides, asking here is like asking your parent can I get this can I get that? Just get it already if you want it.

The Summar is a great lens, if the following two conditions are met:

1. The lens is optically and mechanically pristine.

2. The lens is fully coated.

These Summars exists. Usually they are not more expensive than "normal" Summars.

Definitely get a Summar, also get a Nooky attachment. With this combination you'll never go back to another lens.

My post war coated Summar on a Nooky.
