Buying a Leica: How long did you dream about it?

Just like some wait and wait for that one true love, I'm DYING to have a Leica MP: black laquer, 0.85 viewfinder with a 50mm Summicron. Perfect. It is the most perfect and beautiful object I have ever seen. Not surprisingly, I can't afford it! I think it will be years before I can buy one, which is pretty frustrating. So, how long did you guys have to wait like this? Years? Months? Still waiting?

I hemmed and hawed for about a year, wavering between a Bessa R2 and CV lens or saving up for a Leica.

Then, circa Dec.-Jan '03, I hit a parlay card during the college bowl season - a $20 wager turned into $4k overnight, and my bookie actually paid off right after New Year's. I then spent another month in limbo (do I invest it? do I pay 8 months rent? do I buy a dedicated medium-format scanner?), decided to say screw it and bought a used M7 and a 35/1.4 in quick succession.

Heh. I'll be the devil's advocate here. I have never dreamed of a Leica. They are nicely made cameras, but for me, their flaws outwiegh their advantages. Then, now, and as far into the future as I can imagine, I want a camera that I can grab on my way out the door. Any day, any time of day, any reasin...

The best camera in the world is the camera in your hands. I am reminded of the gentleman at Kent State who had everything preset - he heard a young woman scream, turned, tripped, and owned a pulitzer...

To me, that is the real element in what we do of HCB & Capa... When it works, there are no questions from anyone else...

My first Leica, a IIIf RD, and four lenses came to me quite by accident. A seller at a Farmer's Market/Flea Market in 1970 or '71 offered me all of it for $125. I still have the IIIf and three of the four lenses.

Dreamt of buying a Leica since high school. 10 years later, I'm still dreaming, and it's not looking like the dream will be ending any time soon.

Weeks.

I came back from a trip to Cartagena, Colombia, in August 2003. That year I also had gone to Costa Rica (my summer teaching job). My pics from both places (CR with a Contax G1 and Cartagena w/my Canonet) made my wife say "You're getting good at this."

So I thought I deserved one. In September 22, I simply took the plunge & I placed an order for my first one... and never looked back. Why not? I could always wring my hands later.

BTW, I finished paying for them last year. That and a big medical debt too!

Pretty quick. I did the research about what I wanted to get into then started looking at the various lenses. I'd say about 3 months.

Was working tax free overseas at the time so I got back about 14K a year and just did not want to be in the states for any reason. So I had money to burn and started getting my setup in between outfitting the apartment and making sure the women in my life were maintained. Although, I am now back in the states... I really do not want to be there. Will probably move back out at the end of this year. TAXES SUCK! Will have to move out anyway to afford the Digital M! :bang:

I was too young to understand my first encounter with a Leica: an aunt with M3 and goggled 135. It did leave an impression, as I recalled that moment some 35 years later... while perusing CameraQuest! My high school wet-dream was the SL66 and the newly-introduced Contax RTS. Both of these were completely out of reach, so my Halina Paulette had to suffice.

Have enjoyed the M system for 2+ years. The dream is cheaper if you buy the old stuff - also more satisfying, I think. A fully meterless body (M or Barnack) and any old chrome lens is beautiful, full of history, and takes a great picture. Cheaper systems can fulfill your technical photographic needs.

I got interested seriously in RF cameras for about 6 months, thought that a Bessa R2A would be more practical as an entry to RF, but also factored in that I'll end up getting a Leica anyways, so I bit the bullet and bought an M6 and 50 cron'

I bought a konica auto s2 to see if I like rangefinders in 2003 and used it two months. Next I bought a canonet, and was over it in about a month. After that I bought a bessa r2 and a 50mm nokton, which I used four three or four months till it started making weird noises, so I bought a M6. I have two now (85 + 72 finders) and hardly shoot anything else. I picked up amy wifes canon 20D with a 70-200 once last week and it was heavy in ten minutes.

I don't see myself going back anytime soon, but I am not parting with my hassy 120mm lens ever.

About two years I guess. I was working part-time in a camera shop when I first used a Leica; I was able on two occasions to borrow a used Leica for a week or two. It was about two years later, then working elsewhere, that I took a heavy budget hit (about a month's pay for me at the time) and bought a 10-year-old M body with a new 35 Summicron. I'd already had a pair of Pentax SLRs for a while. A year later I got a new 90mm f/2.8... I still have and use that gear with no regrets. 🙂

I'd suggest you read and study and research the heck out of the subject, get on top of all the details, but be patient. At some point it will all come together, you'll find just the right stuff at the right price, and pounce on it!

I never dreamt about buying a Leica, they are just so damned expensive, but i did dream about useing one. I actually traded a Pentax 67 system for mine and i never looked back.

One more Leica History.

I've always liked photography. As a kid I used my father's Pentax spotmatic with the standard 50mm lens. Limited equipmetnt but lots of fun.

When I left the parential house (at 17) I had to get a camera of my own.
Autofocus was just coming on the market, but it did not appeal to me
(and it still does not, since I believe manual focussing improves pictures, and 50% of the pictures I do not focuss but use the depth of field indicators anyway).
I saved what I could and bought a Pentax super A. Over the years good quality zoom lenses were bought to cover the 24 - 200mm range.
I have been using this pentax for 20 years. It has literally travelled all over the world and has never failed me. No repairs, maintenance or what so ever! Brilliant.

But..... in the mean time...... some 10 years ago I met my American cousin for the first time (I'm Dutch by the way), who owned a M6. Whooo I was impressed. I liked the looks, the feel, the whole lot. I went to the shop and was shocked. Convinced that only mad men would pay so much money for camera and lenses. Every now and then I went back to the shop and all the time came back empty handed; toooo expensive. The years passed on, I thought about it, talked about it but did not act. One day my lovely wife told me wisely:
"You know and I know that at some point in time you'll get one, Since they last forever and never will get cheap, you'd better get it now, thus you'll have more years to enjoy it".

Although I still thought that prises are crazy I decided that If i get one it would be a chrome M6 TTL with 0,85 viewfinder. Last year new ones were getting rare (with the M7 being out) but the old ones were still nowhere to find used in the local shops. Then I discovered e-bay and after a long search I found one with a 50mm Sumilux in mint condition. It was not cheap, but at least reasonable (For a Leica that is to say, still crazy of course). I discussed with my wife, and she decided to give it to me as a gift for the coming 5 birthdays, christmasses etc. For her it had advantages:
- 5 years no need to go and find presents.
- I would always think of her using the camera.

I have it for 3 months now and are very happy with it (I have not touched the Pentax since). The first roll of film I got back was an eye opener. The quality of the pictures was striking at first glance. Without any doubt much much better than the trustworthy Pentax. Handling and focussing of the M6 is not fluent yet, and I do miss quite some opportunities because of it. But the pictures that I make are much better, and that is what it is all about. The quest for lenses has begun!

I dreamed about a month after I tried a neighbors. The pics came out and printed like black and white is supposed to do. The Pentax`s and super MC takumar lenses , about 15/20 of them, were sold. Never could get Japanese glass to work right and I tried for fifteen years.

Zeiss is a decent second place. Since then I bought 4x5 and Schneider/Rodenstock glass. That is pretty good too as long as it is the last generaion or two, not the `60`s stuff. That got dumped too. Leica pics looked better with far less effort.

I dreamed of buying a Leica for 45 years. Then I bought a Fed 1g and a Zorki 1e. 😀

I never have dreamed of buying a Leica but after half a century was able to afford some used gear and just had to find out what all the fuss was about. I have now found that I like some aspects of them and dislike others just as I do any other camera that I have used. To me using one is a pleasant experience but definately not a life altering one. I guess that boils down to the higher the expectations the easier it is to be disappointed.
