Buying an X-Pro 1 in late 2015

Awesome advice, thanks, guys! I've had other Fuji X cameras so it should come pretty naturally...I'm a one-point focus-and-recompose kind of person, so I should be in good shape. Willie, I'm surprised about the energy saving thing...does that slow the camera down?

Yes, it reduces power consumption by slowing the CPU clock rate. Then all the in-camera algorithms run slower. This is not useful with any of the Fujifilm X cameras (unless you are hopelessly low on battery level).

Well, I got the camera today, updated the firmware, and set it up the way I like. Things I notice:

1) It's smaller than I remembered,
2) The EVF is better than I remembered, and
3) AF is indeed really slow.

Such a nice camera, all things considered. I think it will work great for scanning film, and in the meantime I may actually try and shoot with some legacy lenses.

But seriously, this camera looks and feels astonishingly like a black Contax G2, right down to the rough focus. If I set the jpegs to Velvia and shoot with the Touit, a Planar lens, I wonder if it will approximate the results I used to get with the 45mm f/2 Planar (both Zeiss, and the lens diagrams for the two are all but identical) in the Contax.

If you have the light, zone focusing with the distance meter in the display works very well.

Get the hang of the af (put it in area mode and put and edge of you subject in the box) and it will get the job done.

I admit I have had too little time to actually work with the camera, but am getting more comfortable with every session. I am going to reconfigure all my custom modes, then shoot exclusively with a legacy/mf lens for an extended time to actually master at least one aspect. In this case it will be b&w RAW + JPG. I want to see how "good" a JPG I can get straight out of the camera. Yes, I know the X-Pro can produce it, I'm more concerned with my skill level.

So... X-Pro2 is about to come out with rumored $1700 ish price tag.

X-Pro1 is now down to $499 new. I see "like new" used one on my local Craigslist with asking price of $350.

Yes X-Pro1 is now really old in digital camera age, but is pretty darn cheap and it is a great camera. I loved it when it first came out, and I still prefer the rendering of X-E1 over E2.

Am I crazy thinking about getting X-Pro1 for cheap, and maybe upgrade to X-Pro2 for, again, around $500 range when "Pro3" is announced? Maybe I'm getting old, or the digital cameras are mature enough I'm no longer really feeling like I need the latest greatest offering. I chose M9 over Type 240, still happy with my GR after GR II announcement.

It's a lot cheaper so I can put more money in lens and traveling. What do you guys think?

The x-pro1 is still the nicest digital camera I've used. I'm going to buy one once the 2 has dropped at a stupidly low price, and thrash the hell out of it knowing the results will be no worse than any of the up the minute cameras. In fact, I like the x-pro1 quite a bit more than my x-t1.

Nothing remotely crazy about that in my view. Unless a new digital camera offers a very specific advantage over what I already have I will wait for the price to become the most advantageous aspect of any potential purchase.

To me we've plateaued in most aspects of digital photography that matter either to me personally or those that I do any work for. As such it seems to be a fairly healthy point to be at. If you want and can afford the latest and greatest (e.g. Nikon's 3M ISO :) ) then go for it, if not there's plenty that will do what you need at a very sensible price.

When the outlay for a X Pro2 balances with the advantage, to me, over my old XP1 bodies I'll replace my gear but I know the XP2 will be a year old at least before I change over.

Being the near fatally flawed human I am, the lust will still run deep no doubt:)

There's definitely a few quirks to the X-Pro1 but if you can get around them, or they don't bother you, it's a great camera. Very nice image quality.

A retailer I often use seems to have a steady supply of secondhand bodies. I think it's because the have a trade in deal on other Fuji bodies and people are off-loading the X-Pro1 cameras. The great thing is that they're selling them secondhand with 12 month warranty for what I guess is close to trade-in price. There's one now at £167. That's ridiculously good value even without the 12 month warranty.

Of course not.

You are well aware of the X-Pro 1's limitations... which are based entirely upon it's relatively low-performance in-camera CPU. Many of us enjoyed using the X-Pro 1 for the almost three years. We even made great photographs with it from time to time.

I played with the X-Pro1, X-E1, X-E2 and X-T1 at the camera store last week thinking that I could get one as crop/back-up for my M240 but wasn't impressed with the IQ.

my 2c but perhaps look into Sony?
I used to 'scan' with my A7 + FD 50mm macro and you can always go to the old Nex 5, 6, 7, 6000 series if you don't mind APS-C size

Wonderful tools are this little Fujis. I bought a xe-1 and after a couple of days sold my M8 and bought another xe-1. Black one with 35 1.4 and silver with 18. For 200€ used they are a steal.
