Calling V.1 50mm Summilux fans

I love my v1 Summilux 50. Its images are, to my eye, something of great beauty and character. The only downside is its very long focus throw, compared to other 50s.

If it weren't for the long focus throw, it'd by my #1 50mm.

It's not bitingly sharp like some of my modern lenses but suffice to say it will be a primary user for me.

My black copy is bitingly sharp at full aperture; the chrome lens less so.
Coating and f/stop leaves are different on the black lens. I think it is somehow tweaked for professional use.
I don't know if there was originally a price difference between the black and the chrome lenses.

I always thought that Martine Franck was holding a Noctilux 50mm f/1.2 here, but from the shade - a 12585 - I understand that it is a black 50mm Summilux. I can't see if it is a v1 or a v2.

David Douglas Duncan had a lever mounted on his lens.

In the focusing ring of my lens two small holes were made, I think also for some kind of lever.

I have no difficulty with the focus throw, 180 degrees from infinity to one meter, but when shooting moving cats, yes, autofocus will be better.

Just received my Version 1 Summilux 50mm f1.4. Sitting next to my Version 2 Summilux that I already have. They have exactly the same 5 digits serial number.

Thank you Erik! You have a good find too! I haven’t got a chance to try out the lens though. Will let you know my preference after I bring out the lens for testing. The handling of these two lenses are pretty much the same.

Indeed! When I saw this version 1 Summilux in the market I know I have to have it no matter how much it cost. Just imaging how rare it can be. And it turns out to be a good deal. Lucky me.
