can i get some feedback on this image?

What's tricky is the white paint lines on the door look so much like the brush features in lightroom in how they are applied.

Anyone who uses LR alot is always on the lookout for something "too obvious".

The best shooters, as you know, are throwing out 99%, at least to get the few of which they are really proud.

When I look at that doorway, with it's great reflections, I think: weather. I want to shoot in in all kinds of weather at various times of day.

Next what else in the reflection besides weather? Lots of possibilities there 🙂

Also because of the white spray paint I would seriously consider color, to contrast that.

In principle i do like half-told stories (this is what i think this image could be, wants to be), however the story could be a bit more interesting... Based on what i am presented there's not much incentive to try to figure the untold part out.

" The humility of the artist

It seems arrogant to say, "perhaps this isn't for you."

When the critic pans your work, or the prospect hears your offer but doesn't buy, the artist responds, "that's okay, it's not for you." She doesn't wheedle or flip-flop or go into high pressure mode. She treats different people differently, understands that she is working to delight the weird, not please the masses, and walks away.

Isn't that arrogant?

No. It's arrogant to assume that you've made something so extraordinary that everyone everywhere should embrace it. Our best work can't possibly appeal to the average masses, only our average work can.

Finding the humility to happily walk away from those that don't get it unlocks our ability to do great work."

- Seth Rogan

"follow your heart and work honestly about how you feel in the deepest sense about what you are photographing and let the chips fall where they may"

Best advice, ever. Just be yourself.

You probably don't much care for the work of Siskind or Gibson. If that is the case there is a reason you don't care for this. But there are a lot of others that do like the work of both of them. I am one.

Joe it's the journey that matters brother. Just keep on working. Still really like your image BTW (the original). You might be on to something.

Oh yeah I agree and when you have a split of likes and don't likes as both Keith and I pointed out you might be really on to something.

Yeah popularity isn't always a good barometer. Threes Company was one the highest rated TV show in the US.
A great quote by Ansel Adams:
" No man has the right to dictate what other men should perceive, create or produce, but all should be encouraged to reveal themselves, their perceptions and emotions, and to build confidence in the creative spirit." Ansel Adams

. . . . . .sometimes it's nice to hear from others for a different perspective.

Yes. I am often surprised at what someone says about one of my pictures.
To learn (if that's your objective) from a viewer's comments, I think that you have to know the viewer pretty well. (And take it all in with a grain of salt and a glass of water!)

to listen to others evaluate your work is a good (but temporary) marker to compare your images to other's...

just looking at the 'siskind' link you posted elsewhere...all i need to do is rebrand myself as an abstract photographer and i should be good to go...😉

There was a guy - Blaz Kutin - who used to post his abstracts here. I loved his stuff. Even bought his book.
He disappeared though.

found his website: http://www.blazkutin.com/

Some of Siskind's photos are very decorative and interesting by the pattern they present. I do like those for what they are (not a story, but a decorative abstract image). Hell, i even tried to make some of those once in a while.
Some others indeed resemble Joe's photo here and no, i don't care much for those ("abstract expressionism" ? wall with half-ripped off announcement poster without an interesting story behind but not abstract enough to disregard the content... not for me)
About Gibson i don't know. Gibson who?🙂

Of course that's okay that you like what you like. That was not the feedback Joe asked (he asked our feedback on his image, not our feedback on what the other RFFers like 🙂 )

Yeah put together a body of work but remember the times that he was doing that work in. He was good friends with Franz Klein and it was during the Abstract Impressionist movement.

Side note; I read that he started in the Photo League and was doing street photography and like many street photographers in that era they were being labeled as communists. There was at the same time period a huge Abstract movement starting to happen in New York. It was in the literature, music, and art of the day.

But I do think abstract work can be just as relevant todays as it was then. Just take the journey and see where the road takes you. We all know what the final destination is. So sit back and enjoy the ride and please keep sharing.
