Can the Summitar take filters?

Ah, okay, so the glass filter inbetween cannot be threaded. But where to find threadless round filters?
 
All the Series x filter adaptors that I have, have back ends that pressure fit to the outside dia. of the lens. I have several Series VI adaptors that have different sized back ends to fit lenses of different diameters. Seems as though Corazon has located a Series filter holder that is expressly threaded for the Summitar lens. That's a good find.
Big camera stores or online photo suppliers will sell series IV filters.

Corizan, if you go the other route with a glassless Summitar filter plus step up ring, you can use the epoxy glue to mate the them together permanently. Epoxy glue is available almost everywhere fine glues are sold. Whith this setup, you can buy readily available threaded filters.

I use a Kodak Series VI Adapter Ring 1 5/8in. 41mm push-on to hold Series VI filters and/or a Series VI round hood. Works fine on the knurled outer surface of the Summitar and never leaves a mark.

I lied: I do have a Series VI filter holder where the back end is threaded to 40.5mm which is just right for my J-8, Helios 103, and CZ Sonnar 50mm lenses for Contax.
 
I just did a seach on eBay for 'series vi filter' - there are enough there to purchase, and also enough to see how they work. The Series VI filters are in ready supply in camera stores' "junk boxes", and there are always a few on offer on eBay.
 
My Series 6 adaptor is non threaded. It has a tightening screw on the side and it is marked "42 S S 6 Tiffen Adaptor Ring". I assume the 42 means 42mm. The adaptor has the threaded ring on front to unscrew and insert filters but can be replaced by a Series 6 shade which still allows filters to be inserted. I read about it on another thread on RFF. I like the screw mount rather than the friction fit push ons but if you can find the threaded adaptor you would probably be better off. For $.99 it fulfills my needs and can perhaps be used on another camera.

OldNick, jgcraft, and other Series VI users,

A pic is worth a thousand words. 😀 Can someone post a few closeup snaps of your Series VI filter adapters attached to your Summitars? Just curious to see how they look and work, particularly if you are using a lens hood other than the SOOPD with the setup. THANKS!

Okay, what's the largest step-up what would fit in there? I was considering stepping-up to 43mm. The male end of the step-up filter doesn't have to be a specific size right? Just small enough to fit inside the Summitar filter ring. Which Should be something like 36.5mm.


I wanted to step-up to 58mm, but I realized the filter will be recessed into the lens and the Summitar isn't wide enough for that.

So Assuming what I just wrote about the 43mm step-up is true, then I am all set to go, since I am having trouble finding that Summitar to E39 adapter. And then I'll just use 43mm and 58mm to satisfy all my filter needs for all my lenses.
 
Hi. I'm coming in late but may be able to help. I measured the inside of my Summitar filter and saw that a step up ring with a smaller male end of 39mm would sit nicely in the front end of a glassless Summitar filter ring. You don't want the small end of the step up ring to be too small, or it will cause vignetting.

There are a few types of Summitar filters. Inspired by this thread I found out one of mine actually takes 39mm filters! It's an original Leitz filter with a 39mm thread in front.
This means I have some Summitar filters to spare. A black ring light yellow ('0', Leitz) and a chrome ring regular yellow (''Y2, Kenko). A third has a screw fitted yellow filter. No brand, light scratches. This thread is smaller than 39mm.

Good luck! An additional note, 39-40.5mm adapters exist as well. Will not intrude as much into the finder field of view. A Leitz version is currently on the auction site.

I'm gonna go with that filter mount I posted earlier, get a 39-43 step up and pick up some epoxy then.
 
Wait, Corazon! That filter mount you posted earlier was a Series filter holder for Summitar. My measurement was of a Summitar filter.
 
If you want to go with the step up ring (39-43) then get yourself a Summitar filter and remove the glass. If you want to use that Series filter hold that you posted earlier, then buy Series filters.
