I'm afraid Marion and I are also going to have to drop out of this one. We're going on an Alaska cruise with other family members.

grainhound said:BJ has suggested the Montreal Auberge de Jeunesse as a place to stay. I’ve checked their site on the net & there are rooms for 3,4,6, & 10. I figure that 4 is likely the most convenient room size with respect to organising a congenial group, & they have more 4 bed rooms than other sizes. If a larger group works out, that’s definitely ok with me. Copied from their site:
* 3 rooms with 3 beds (on 2 floors)
* 24 rooms with 4 beds (on 4 floors)
* 8 rooms with 6 beds (on 3 floors)
* 6 rooms with 10 beds (on 3 floors)
I’d like to get a 4 person group (or larger) started, as I tend to get anxious about getting a reasonably priced room in a city like Montreal, even if it’s not quite Paris in the spring time. I’ll even make the reservation once we’ve got a group, & we’ll settle up in Montreal. $30 for non-HI members, $22.75 for members.
I'm planning to take the train down. Driving, then having to park, in downtown Montreal is the original non-starter.

Guy, I am in. If you want I can PM you my email address, that may be a better way of organizing. Or shoot me a note with more specifics if you have them. If you arrange for a room/rooms of what ever number just count me in the group.

I'm going to need one of these cheap rooms as well, I'm afraid. My accountant was not too pleased about the cost of this trip without the family.

The cost should not be too much. I figure with the inexpensive room, driving up, and starting a diet that weekend will help.

Dave & Joe: Yeah, it's a bummer, for sure. My old man is 82 today, and we missed seeing him, my step-mom and the rest of the family the last two holidays, so we promised to come in the Spring, so the Murkin Memorial Day is when we're going.
I wanted to collect my free beer from Dave
and was looking forward to meeting joe, as he has even less hair than me.
But on the GOOD side, I've finally gotten my arse in gear and am processing a backlog of film. Three rolls yesterday, only 10 to go! My little drying setup can only handle 3 rolls at a time, so it will not be completely done for a bit.

Anyone else from the GTA want to drive with Mike (dadsm3) and me, leaving Saturday AM, returning Sunday?

Maybe I'll drive up. I've got a son and a daughter living in Chicago (in the same apartment) so I could visit them on the way.
Probably not too far of a drive from Chicago to Montreal?

My recollection is 12 hours - Chicago through Detroit to Toronto, then 6 or more from Toronto to Montreal. Depends on how you drive, of course. The U.S. route looks less direct on the map.

Yeah, it's a minimum of five hours from Toronto to Montreal (depends what part of Toronto you start in, I guess) and from what I've heard, crossing at Detroit/Windsor can be hellish. If you still want to drive up, we will be glad to have you.grainhound said:My recollection is 12 hours - Chicago through Detroit to Toronto, then 6 or more from Toronto to Montreal. The other day I spent a few hours in city with a pocketful of film. Most of the time was in Vieux Montréal, but I also took a few pictures around the edge of downtown and the lower Plateau. I uploaded the better pictures to my website at http://www.bjandjo.ca/gallery; look for the "Vieux Montréal" and "Downtown Montréal" galleries.
They're not the best pictures, but I wanted to give a sense of what the city is like, in the interest of generating some excitement. Next week, I am away, but the following week I'll do another series, probably on the Plateau and the Village.
Enjoy!

//edit: I also figured out on this trip out that my framelines are tilted. I have to do some tests, and hopefully I'll have a camera that works properly for the meet!

Talking about camera problems, I just found out that my R2 has a really huge back focus problem and a little vertical misalignment. The back focus is bad enough to ruin a shot with a 35mm lens at f/4 with subject at 2m. Imagine with the 75/2.5!!! I now have to find a place to have it fixed.

I’ve got a room with 4 beds reserved at the Auberge Jeunesse de Montreal on Mackay Street (good location downtown). Rover & I are there for Friday through Sunday night, Frank for Saturday & Sunday night, so we need one more to fill the room with RFF guys (at least for 2 of 3 nights). $30 per night, per person. If you are interested, please email me through RFF instead of sending me a PM. For reasons I don’t get, I haven’t been able to access any of the approx. 4 PMs I’ve been sent.

Depends on the Train.
There are "quicker" trains (in the sense that they don't make as many stops) but I would either have to go earlier (9:30am) or later (5:00pm) - and that's no fun.. so I'll take a leisurely journey with my iPod, my RF cameras, my laptop and probably a copy or two of LensWork
