I'm just taking a break from all the crime and nudity around here....

I'd like to get a 55mm protective filter for the 50/1.2, but Dante Stella's page warns to be careful because some filters might touch the front element.

Does anyone have a suggestion for how to source this?

Thanks!

There were a set of filters made for the 50 1.2. I was lucky enough to pick up a set real cheap but before that I used other filters and didn't have a problem. I sure there are some filters out there though where the glass is very low into the thread area. If you are really worried about this punch the glass out of a scratched or old UV filter and use it as a spacer (obviouly would need to be a front and rear threaded filter to work).

One of our brothers in rangefinderhood contacted me with the exact item I needed, a BIN at ebay which I immediately took advantage of.

So now I'll be able to take the chubby lens out onto the mean streets with a bit less worry.

And you can all return to your nudity and plans for Celtic world domination.

It is actually the slim/thin Hoya Super HMC Pro1 filter that I recommended
to Fausto. Doesn't touch the front element. It NEEDS to be slim since
the lens vignettes with normal filters, at f5.6 and above. The original
Canon filters that came with the lens were thin, too.

If you are not sure if the filter touches the lens, take a drop of lens cleaning
fluid, put it in the center of the front element, and screw the filter on
carefully. You will then be able to check.

Best,

Roland.

I have an original Canon 55mm filter that is specifically marked for the 50/1.2 lens. It is a slim-line filter, consistent with Roland's statement. It is very thin, between 2mm and 3mm.

I have two original silver Canon 55mm filters specifically marked for the 55mm f1.2 lens, one is a UV, and the other is a medium red. Both are slim-line filters.

I believe these were also available in yellow, and orange, as well. Would like to find them, actually.

I just checked my bag of filters, and discovered a bunch of Canon filters made specifically for the 50/1.2 lens. All are slim-line filters, and appear to be constructed of hard aluminum alloy. I have the following: R1, G1, O1, Y3, 80B, 85B and two UV. Most are in the original plastic cases. I acquired these a few years ago on eBay as part of an auction for a VI-T.

Oh, really?

Are you saying that you're not using them?

Not very often...too many lenses, so little time. I usually prefer to use a 35mm lens as a "normal", and on the occasions that I use a 50mm, I typically use the Canon 50/1.5 or 50/1.8 because they are a lot more compact and lighter than the 1.2. If I don't need the speed, I won't use the 1.2.

Well, there's a super-thin UV Hoya on it's way....

but, Dexdog, if you ever decide to de-accession any of those filters just give me a holler.

Thanks everyone, & I'll let you know how it goes.
