my canon 50/1.8 (chrome) has the best looking aperture I've ever seen - fully circular all the way down.
The Canon 50/1.8 is probably the sharpest of the Canon lenses "if" you can get one with good glass.
But I still favor the 50/1.5 because I am a Sonnar fanatic...

Hello Steve,
What is reasonable, if you do not mind me asking?
I am not sure that I would like to spend $150 on this lens. I which that I would be handier and could fix it myself but you have to know your limits....
Cheers,
Luc
Luc -- It depends to some degree on what Sherry determines the lens needs by way of overhaul and cleaning. She did a 1/2 overhaul on mine (including cleaning the elements and diaphragm blades, lubricating and adjusting to Canon tolerances), for just under $100 including shipping and insurance. That strikes me as quite reasonable, given that the lens was a good one to start with and worth spending a little $$ to get it as good as it can be.

$100 including shipping sounds very reasonable to get back your lens to "spec".
I am almost thinking that I should send the Canon P for a CLA at the same time and have only one shipping (it's funny but it is cheaper to ship between Canada and UK than Canada and USA) most of the time.
Thanks

That is what it looks like, I just scanned a test roll and the 50/1.8 seems sharper than my J-8. Arguably my J-8 might not be collimated to give best results and/or might not have good optics to start with. The glass of my 50/1.8 is looking great so it would be worth doing a CLA.

I would like to have it CLA at a reasonable cost. Would DAG or Essex be the best places to send it or is there somebody with better price? I am in Canada.
I've just had a lens re-lubed by David Yau (David Yau's Camera Service) in Toronto. Turnaround? 1 day!! He previously did CLA work on my M4-P and Rollei 35SE, both quickly and at reasonable cost. Since you're in Canada, try him for an estimate on your Canon lens.
The Canon 50/1.8 (black & silver) was my first 50mm lens and I still use it. I bought it in preference to the 50/1.4 due to its smaller size and weight as I'm not much of a low light shooter. It's a great lens. For convenience I use a 40-43mm step-up ring so I can share 43mm filters with other lenses.

That sounds good. David did my Hasselblad 500CM. I had contacted him on the Canon and it was really busy at the time and was going to contact me again. he never did so I assume that he was not interested. I will contact him again as it makes shipping a lot easier.
I have the original Canon hood for the 35/2.8 which is also for the 50/1.8 and a few series 6 filters (yellow, red, polarizer) to go inside so that makes the 35/2.8, 50/1.8 combo very convenient - and the 100/3.5 of course.
Cheers,
Luc

He called me today about my lens to discuss servicing options & costs and I only shipped it to him yesterday. It's probably a very good time to contact him. Initially I sent him an e-mail (d.yau@rogers.com) and he replied quickly.

I sent the email. I asked him also about a CLA on the Canon P to cut on shipping cost.
Thank again.

I heard back from David Yau.
He does not repair Canon and will be away for a month so I will send the lens to Essex see if the images can improve afterward
Cheers,
