That's really me
Somebody bid $1,357.00 thinking "Nobody will be crazy enough to bid that high", then came along the winning bidder who bid some amount north of $1,358.00 (and in my opinion made a huge mistake)

What's so special about price? $1234 would be really thrilling!
I'm looking at the Buyer and Seller history- thinking the lens is from a reliable seller, was recently CLA'd, looks like new. The buyer wanted the best 50/1.4 that could be found and this was it.
I don't understand why the 50/0.95 sells for over $2000. My pair were $200 each. The 50/1.1 Nokton is a better lens in every respect, and the T-Stop is probably about the same as the Canon at F0.95.
On the Nikkor 5cm f1.4 Aluminum lens- they do not wear as well as the heavier brass lenses, but they are lighter. The black ones look better.

Damn, just when I'm in the market for this lens, the prices skyrocket. KEH will have one listed for $1500 soon.

Easy answer. A rising tide raises all boats. With a new 50/0.95 Noctilux costing over $10,000 USD and a 50/1.4 Summilux coming in at over $3,500 USD, any 50mm lens by any manufacturer has gone up in price too. And considering that it's virtually impossible to locate either of the two Leica lenses, demand has gone up sharply for their alternatives.
As for why anybody would sound so much money for this Canon 50/1.4, beats me. Probably bidding fever I guess.

Canon 50/1.4 LTM lens just sold for $1358.00
This is a excellent lens. I have had mine for 20 years or so. I have five pictures that I took at the Mexican Day Parade here in NYC. in my photo gallery. Taken with a Leica M7. Check them out and you can see the quality of the lens.

i imagine it should have been something in the $500-ish range up to the last minute...
probably person 1 bid $1357 as a random high figure thinking nobody would bit that high. then people would bid up but never reach it.
and then in the last minute person 2 bid $2000 thinking "i'll overtake any high bids on this baby".
well, turns out person 2 was right!
I cannot see it just being a bidding war. 3 times the going price because 2 bidders decided to get in war? Not likely. I think Brian Sweeney is probably closer to right and coupled with a a bidder from another country capitalizing on the relatively weak dollar.

That's $1,000 more than I paid for mine from Nobby's esteemed competitor.

Says Summilux in the ad, has great product shots, is CLA'd and looks as new.
I guess some people got frustrated trying to secure a Summilux 50/1.4 for their M9 and decided to whip out a substantial amount of cash for a lens they considered similar.
Likely we will see some ads come up with a higher-than-before BIN price soon, always sellers trying to cash in on occasions like this...

Does that mean my three rooms stuffed floor to ceiling with old camera stuff is only impulse buying![]()
No. It's Completely Normal.
Your lights are on, but you're not home
Your mind is on what you own
Your heart sweats, your body shakes
Another lens is what it takes
You can't sleep, you can't eat
The classifieds are all you read
Your throat is tight, you can't breathe
Another lens is all you need
Whoa, you like to think that you're immune to the stuff, oh yeah
It's closer to the truth to say you can't get enough
You know you're gonna have to face it, you're addicted to gear
You see the signs, but you can't read
You're shooting at, a different speed
You heart beats, in double time
Another lens, and you'll be fine
You can't be saved
Gear is all you crave
If there's some left for you
Paypal balance will have to do
Whoa, you like to think that you're immune to the stuff, oh yeah
It's closer to the truth to say you can't get enough
You know you're gonna have to face it, you're addicted to gear
Might as well face it, you're addicted to gear

I had to pick up a rough 50mm 1.4 (dust, cleaning marks, oil on blades, etc) from Japan for $280 shipped before these get out of control.
