Canon 7. Saves a lot of bucks

Folks, will the .95 block the viewfinder (or rangefinder, more importantly) of the M cameras? I'd stick with the 7 since that's the body it was made for.

(I have a 7 on its way to me; I suppose I'll have to pick up a .95 now!)

I used a Canon 7s to focus a Canon 50mm/0.95. I found focusing wide open was not difficult.

It blocks the brightness window on most bodies. It intrudes into the viewfinder most shamelessly - it took up nearly the lower quarter on the three bodies I shot it on. You get used to it.

That said, if I had bought a 7 with the 0.95 on it instead of the M-mount conversion of the TV, I might still have the lens.

The 0.95 also blocks about 1/4 of the lower right of the Canon 7 viewfinder. As John aka foto_fool says, you get used to it. Shooting with both eyes open helps.

The Canon 7 may be the only camera designed to accept the 0.95, but it could have been designed better to do so.

The lens is still awesome, if you can handle the shallow DOF.

I use the Canon 0.95 with a Bessa R3M. This lens blocks the lower left corner of the viewfinder but it's not worse than with the other cameras. As for the rangefinder, the effective base length is 37mm, which I consider enough to focus accurately. Yes, it is important to have a long base length to focus accurately, but it is even more important to have a lens and a camera that are properly adjusted.

Anyway, focusing this lens with a rangefinder is certainly not an easy job, even with a Leica M3 (62.33mm effective base length, that's 1.68x the Bessa R3): at the minimum focusing distance (1m) and wide open, the depth of field is only 1cm. If you shoot handheld, taking a breath before shooting can easily move your camera 1cm away from the subject! 😱

If you do not wear glasses, the ZI plus the 1.35x mag will surely be good. I find that the ZI has the distance between the VF and the lens axis slightly longer than Leica, so it helps with bigger lenses, and the bright VF is superior to Leica VF in low light too.

Probably right. You need a very good conversion job for this. The poor Bessa with such a huge lens... 😱

I'd go with a Canon 7s or 7. . . You could pick up either body for the cost of getting a 0.95 modified to fit an M-series camera. The avilability of fast colour and b&w film makes the 0.95 kind of an exercise in excess. . . Having said that . . . there's nothing particularly rational about lusting after fast glass - whether a Canon 50mm F:0.95 or a 1972 Lotus Elan Sprint DHC. . .
