I ordered these two lenses off keh.com along with a Canon 7.

If I get along with these lenses, then I plan on getting a hood & filters; however they use the uncommon 40mm thread so I'd probably need to go aftermarket to keep things simple/cheap. I don't have any experience with step up rings and aftermarket hoods but it seems that Heavystar is reliable.

I checked ebay and it seems that I have 5 step up options:
1) 40mm - 40.5mm
2) 40mm - 43mm
3) 40mm - 46mm
4) 40mm - 49mm
5) 40mm - 52mm

But Heavystar seems to have vented hoods options 1,2, & 3. I'm kind of hesitant to try other hoods so it seems to me hat these are my three best options.

My questions
1) Does it matter how far I step up? I'd probably go with 1) or 3) since there are lenses that I'm interested in those filter threads.

2) I hear that the 35mm f1.8 vignettes with filters/hoods. What filters/hoods do you guys use?

3) Can I stick the adapter on, then the filter, then the hood? Or will I experience any adverse effects from this? 40mm filters seem difficult to find.

Keep in mind that many of the vented hoods out there are aimed at 50mm lenses. I tried a heavystar lens hood on the Canon 35mm 2.8 via a 40-40.5 adapter and it vignetted severely. Throw a filter on before the hood and it would have been worse.

Thanks Brian,

What shade do you use? Or do you use even use one? I looked into this some more and another viable option seems to be a short series 7 hood...so maybe I outta look for one of those instead.

The 35mm/1.8 never had a Canon hood AFAIK. It vignettes with the 40-43mm step up ring. Adding a hood makes things even worse. I ended up using mine without hood.

The 50mm/1.8 takes 40-43mm step up ring + the Heavystar vented hood very nicely.

I wonder if the Canon Series 6 hood (for 50/1.8 and 35/2.8) will work with the 35/1.8?

+1. You really don't need a hood on the 35/1.8 since the front element is very recessed. I tried a heavystar hood and 40-43 step up ring on my 35/1.8, and encountered noticeable vignetting. The 40-43 step up plus heavystar hood works perfectly on the 50/1.8. I prefer it to the original clamp on hood.

Yes, the round Canon 35/2.8 // 50/1.8 hood will work fine on the 35/1.8, but will block a good bit of the finder. The vented rectangular Canon hood for those lenses is much nicer to use in every way. I've used it many times with the 50/1.8 and 35/1.8 lenses with no trouble.
