I just picked up a nice Canon 85mm F 1.8 screwmount lens in a camera store over here, couldn't pass it up when I saw it. But one thing, I can't get it to attach properly with an adapter to a Leica M6. I got the 85mm lens to use on my Canon 7s and also a Canon P, but would also like to use it on my M6.
I've tried two Voigtlander adapters, the 135mm and 90mm, and also an old Leica M3 35mm and 50mm adapter.
My Canon 100mm F2, 100mm F 3.5 and Canon 35mm F2 screwmount lenses work fine with any of the adapters on my Leica M6. But strangely, not the 85mm F 1.8 lens.
Was the 85mm F 1.8 made differently than the other Canon screwmount lenses? I can't get it to attach with that satisfying ''click'' onto the Leica M6 lens mount like all my other lenses.

Like almost anything from a Tokyo camera store, looks to be in excellent condition, cost me quite a lot in fact. The lens works fine on my 7, 7S and 7SZ and my Canon P, but not my Leica M6. Too bad, but guess I'll just have to suffer through using it on the Canons.

I have a whole series of Canon lenses and they all work fine with Leica or Voigtlander adapters, but I recently had the same problem with a NIkkor lens and it turned out not to be a lens issue, but an adapter one. When I switched from one Voigtlander adapter to another the click was there.

Here's the lens. Standard screw mount, fits fine on all my Canons. But won't click on the Leica with my Voigtlander 28-90, 35-135 adapters, or my Leica M3 28-50 adapters.

That's 3 adapters - if they are all CV, I'd see if I could borrow a different make, even a cheapo adapter. If none of them fit, then the problem, as it seems right now, is with the lens. I did have a Canon lens that did not fit with one adapter, but using just a different one solved the problem. Not sure what kind of solution you're looking for, but if it won't fit with ANY adapter, that's really the end of the story. Have a pro look at the lens itself... Good luck.

Try the Leica 9cm adapter. I cannot talk about how it works on a M6 but at least it connects the 85/1.8 to the Bessa R3M nicely.

Thanks. Yeh, I used to have a Leica Elmar 50mm collapsible screwmount that I wanted to use on a Leica M-3 I used to have. But with the Voigtlander adapter that I bought for it, it did not work, I could not focus with the lens. I took it back to the shop here in Tokyo and demonstrated it for the owner, who at first, didn't believe me that the Voigtlander did not work. He then traded the Voigtlander adapter for a much more expensive Leica M3 50 adapter, which worked perfectly with the Elmar and I was happy to upgrade the adapter at no cost to me. I'll bet the Leica 90 adapter will work fine, unfortunately, those are pretty pricy here in Tokyo.

Solved it!

Solved it!

Pretty stupid on my part, but I took my 85mm F 1.8 and Leica M6 to Hero-san at Sukiya Camera, and he quickly solved it. I had bought a case for my Leica M6, which was obstructing the adapter and lens when I tried to attach it.
I'm glad it was that simple. Hero-san is a great guy, here is an essay I wrote about his store at Japanexposures.com

Don't feel dumb-we've all done similar things. Live and learn. BTW-nice story.

Bill,
Thanks! I am enjoying writing essays for Japanexposures. I'm hoping they'll let me write my next one on my Canon rangefinder camera collection.
Actually, I was at a huge used camera show in the Ginza on Saturday when I saw Hero-san there and showed him my Canon 85mm lens and M6, and asked why it couldn't be attached to my camera. I almost was going to pull the trigger on buying a Leica 90mm F 2.8 or Minolta Rokker 90mm F4 for my M6 at the show, so I was fortunate in now being able to use my Canon 85mm with it.

Barry:

You're most welcome. I guess you saw in another thread here I just got a 85/ 1.8 from Jiri Ecer in Toyko. If you don't know him, you oughta' contact him--he's one, fine guy. His email is jiri dot e dot jp at gmail dot com. BTW-if you ever get to Korea, please contact me at wrs111445 at yahoo dot com.

I'm resisting the urge to get a 100/2 Canon black now!!!!

Bill,
Thanks! Will do! And if you ever get to Tokyo, let me know. Maybe we can hit some camera stores here together.
I don't know Jiri, but have seen his ads. Bad thing is I might be tempted to buy something from him, he has some good things for sale!
I did pick up a Canon 100mm F2 at a used camera show in Tokyo last fall. I had to go the first day to grab it, not in perfect shape, in good user condition, but I was very happy to get it. If I get the lens cleaned, it will look like new.
Collecting Canon screwmount lenses has kind of become an addiction for me. I figured living here in Tokyo, I might as well get into a collecting mode that was more realistic than Leica, which are very expensive here.

Barry:

Will do. If I lived in Toyko, I'd be dirt poor, but have every Canon RF lens ever made. I luv 'em and have no desire for Leica. As soon as my girlfriend wakes up this morn, I hope to go out and use my L1 w/ 25 and 85 Canons.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
Actually, Canon collecting makes more sense if you live in Japan, rather than Leica, where the prices are out of sight here. Even Nikon rangefinder gear is very pricy, since there isn't much selection. So, Canon rangefinder gear is a relative ''bargain,'' and prices will likely go up, so I tell my wife all those lenses I'm buying are an ''investment.'' I think that Jiri, who buys a lot of gear here and sells it on-line around the world, lives on the other side of Japan from me, in Kobe, so probably won't ever meet him here. Funny how in the essay I wrote for Japanexposures.com where I mention how camera shops here go to the big shows in the States and often buy old Japanese cameras and lenses to sell back here to collectors.
