Canon AE-1 Shutter Button Stuck down

Hi,
The actual button is stuck down, it moves down a tiny bit and can only be pulled up with a cable release inserted, once it is pulled up when pressure is applied it gives a bit of resistance then seems to 'snap' back down into its original place.

When pressed it feels like there is no dampening on the button which I'm used to feeling when I press it

The camera has been in constant use in the last 6 months and has a fresh battery in.

Any suggestions on what i could try before sending it in for a CLA which i wont be able to afford for months?

Sorry to hear that. If no-one can help, it may be a better/cheaper idea to buy another. I'v e seen working ones go for $30. Not sure how much they are in your 'hood.

Take the bottom plate off, you may be able to see a loose link or spring come adrift.

Nothings wrong under the bottom, i removed it a few months ago to fix the squeak

My Canon AE1Program died. About 4 years ago I had it CLA'd for the squeal problem. You'd be better off, cheaper too to buy another one. Here is something you can check but I doubt this is the problem.

Jake, have a look at the thread I've just started about replacing the focusing screen on an AE-1. The photos show the construction of the main meter / shutter switch clearly. The shutter release button itself is not spring-loaded, it relies on the springiness of the top leaf of the 3-layer brass leaf switch below. It's all held in place by a single screw at the back, next to the frame counter. Sounds like maybe the top leaf has broken or bent. Should be an easy fix. If you're having trouble finding parts, DM me — I've got loads of spares.
