Canon Arrived...

Got home and found two parcels awaiting me. The first, larger, one was the Canon. Beautiful looking and feeling. Gorgeous everreay case. Tripped the shutter a couple of times at different speeds and all sounded just perfect. Went to mount my Industar... :bang: won't go all the way on and took one heck of a hard time to get it back off. Both sets of threads look fine, but no joy. 🙁

Ok, I sez, I'll ask at RFF but first I'll listen to that shutter again. Except, nothing happens. I go to turn the Wind knob and it won't move. It's jammed. Totally jammed. :bang: :bang: :bang:

It's already dropped off at the local repair shop. I'll have an estimate after noon tomorrow...

Yes, I did. Thinking about it since I got home I think I turned the speed dial while it was uncocked after futzing with the lens. So I managed to do myself in that quickly...

My memory is not clear on this, but I think I remember reading a procedure for unjamming a screwmount Leica so afflicted, that does not involve disassembly. Anyone know how?

My Industar 61 doesn't fit any of my Canons or Leica adapters. Best to get a black Jupiter 8. The thread of the early Soviet lenses is not an exact Leica thread.

In my (admittedly not recent) experience, turning the shutter speed dial of a bottom-loader Canon while it's uncocked simply recocks the shutter -- no harm done. In fact, this is a convenient way to make double exposures with these cameras.

So, I suspect you're experiencing coincident but unrelated failures -- or else your FSU lens is accursed.

I have no trouble screwing on the L/D 61 on any of my rf Ltm Canons, from the III to the 7. Try a different Industar L/D 61 on these Canon cameras & Leica M adapters.

There is a huge truth there, Francisco. The gentleman at BDC (Unofficially known around here as "Broke D*ck Cameras" 🙂 ) didn't seem overly concerned and they're quick to pass on what they don't care to try to fix. I'll get it back soon enough and put silver halides through it and be a happy camper.

Was all of this while unloaded? I jammed my IIF shutter by NOT cutting the film to that 4.5" little "icon" on the bottom of the camera. Figured if the Leica IIIf worked, so should the Canon. WRONG!

Well, got it back from BDC here in Madison. They won't touch it 🙁 However, DAG is one city away in Oregon WI, so after talking with him on the phone, it's in the mail to him now. ~$100 for the repair, probably :bang:

Ouch, I did a number on it...The takeup clutch spring broke, I broke something in the winder
when I jammed it, the RF is off and the film to flange distance is off. The good news is that the shutter itself is in fine shape. Total repair cost is $110, about what I'd expected. Plus he has a baseplate to replace the engraved one for $15; at this point that's not a big difference so I'll get that too.

But hopefully in week or so I'll have my bottom loader in my hands and working fine.

William, I've often wondered about BDC.. have you ever had them work on anything for you?

and I find it somewhat funny that you mailed your camera from Madison to Oregon.. that's what.. 6 miles away? 🙂 But I know Don doesn't want people showing up at his workplace, which I assume is also his house

BDC is ok for small and newer things, but thier prices are a bit high for the kinds of camera here. RF's and the like they don't want to do. OTOH, what work I have had done by them was first rate. Plus they didn't charge me an estimate fee when they told me they couldn't do the repair on the Canon.

As for mailing, yeah that was kind of funny. But I think your reason is right along with the fact that he can probably keep track of everything better. The biggest cost of sending it was the insurance 🙂

Yikes! Got home from an errand (pricing some old beater cameras for an estate sale. The 2 good ones are badly busted... 🙁 ) and found an UPS notice on the door. DAG had already finished and shipped my camera! I'll have to stop at the UPS counter at 7:30 tonight to pick it up, but, man that's fast service!

William

Don is a good guy to deal with. He has two of my lenses, I am getting the ones that need a little TLC the care they need to shine for me. Well, his prices are more than reasonable, he communicates well, and is relatively fast as his work load allows.
