The different battery packs would be useful if you were using additional flash heads with bulbs off the one battery unit.
The capacitor is readily replaced with a new electrolytic capacitor from Radio Shack or Mouser Electronics, just a matter of being a little creative in how you connect it to replace the original.

What I am asking is :Like the older lenses, does using the old flash units help to render a more antique look to the pictures? Has anyone noted a difference?Any users of the old bulb flash units? I know the old bulbs are hard to find and the more modern unints are easier to use but I wondered if the old stuff perhaps gave a different rendering to a photo. I use a Canon P , and sometimes a III or IIs2

Not in the character of the light, per-se. Well, it may be slightly less of a point source, given the size of the reflector.
More important is that (presuming you use a 6B or 26B bulb), you can shoot at shutter speeds all the way to 1/1000. Also, you also have the option of smaller apertures, since they pack more light than most electronic flashes.
