I have a Canon IIf arriving - and am wondering about a few things:
I've read about some older lenses showing cleaning marks. I'm new to this old a camera. It is, though, in very good condition. Should I keep the lens clean in a certain manner so as to avoid "cleaning marks?" Is it because of the coating on older lenses that they are prone to this? It's a Canon 1.8 by the way. Are there any particulars about this camera that someone could tell me about? I want to operate it properly, and even though I have read a users manual online, I want to avoid any common mistakes.
Where, other than ebay, can I get a shoe mounted meter for it? Can anyone tell me the filter size and where I might find a lens shade?
Regards to all. PC

Hello PC,

as far as I know, the Canon lenses had rather hard glass surfaces and were not so prone to cleaning marks. The old (until the 50ties, but especially pre WWII) Leitz lenses were the ones to take extra care. If you are anxious to scratch the lens, a filter (e.g. UV) will definitely help.

Robert is right. I had a blemish-free Serenar 50/1.8 from 1985 to 2002 and a badly mauled Summarit over the same period. If you use a shoe-mounted meter, there won't be any place for an accessory finder. Hood probably 42mm, filter thread 40mm. Hunt as hard as you can for a rectangular hood. Don't know what your environment is like, but dust, damp and heat are all bad for photographic equipment. Exercise is good. Satisfying results are the finest reward.
