I just bought this camera and put a roll of film through it and they are half black which probably means the shutter. All my speeds sound the same and when I put it on b and press the shutter it seems to fire all the way through even with holding the button down. I took off the lens and watched the shutter and I can't see the film when the shutter is fired even at slowest setting. I believe there should be two curtains but I can only see one, and I should be able to see the film when the shutter is fired and the lens off. Am I correct? Any ideas of what to check? The camera is in pristine cosmetic condition and came with a 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.9 lenses.

Sounds like your shutter is gummed up. There’s a lot of things you can check, but to start you off, try taking the lens off the camera and look at the shutter as you advance the film. You should see two curtains moving across the film plane. And if the shutter speed is set to one second and you fire the shutter, you should see the first curtain travel across the film plane, then curtain number two.

I only see one curtain and the speeds sound the same fast or slow.

They are certainly beautiful (the lenses and camera)!
However, they are old and in need of cleaning and service.
Send to DAG, Gus Lazzari, or Youxin Ye. I've had good experiences with all 3 for non-Leica gear.

I saw youxin mentioned here numerous times, so I googled him and as it turns out he's 15 minutes from me. I will call him tomorrow.

I also would like to know what would be the best bang for the buck for digital camera that would take these lenses well?

I noticed your camera has the E-P mark. Do the lenses have it too?. And yeah, your shutter needs servicing. Old lube will do that to them. Not sure exactly which digital cameras they will work on best, maybe Sony m4/3.

The 85mm has the ep but the 50 does not.

I saw youxin mentioned here numerous times, so I googled him and as it turns out he's 15 minutes from me. I will call him tomorrow.

Youxin did an outstanding job on a CLA and curtain replacement for my IVsb last year, at a very reasonable price and quick turnaround. He has a very high opinion of these cameras.

Being in such clean condition, yours may have sat unused for years, which is not a good thing for these older cameras. Lubricants dry out and shutter curtains start to crack. Once it's serviced, I suspect it will function as good as new.

Quality-wise, my IVsb is very close if not equal to my Leica IIIf, with a superior VF/RF arrangement over the Leica. It's a great shooter, so have fun burning thru a lot of film with it!

I saw Youxin today and he says it needs a shutter and the viewfinder is not very bright. We chatted and I watched him work for about 2 hours. He woks on his kitchen table with every tool you can imagine. He received a box of about 12 Leica's in it from a Camera store in Chicago that needs repair. He said he is working 7 days a week trying to keep up. I wish I had the extra cash to have him put in a new shutter but it's not a good time right now, especially since I probably wouldn't use it anyway. I may sell it as is or put in my very low budget collection where it will be king.
