Really, really coolI wish there was more history about how many of each type were made...Seems like the serial numbers are tough to decipher! Collect the whole set!

I’m not aware of any production numbers. Some Canon collectors have recorded serial numbers for black bodies and it looks like Canon made them in batches. So while pumping out chrome bodies, they would produce a certain amount of black ones. They do look cool, no doubt about that.

Enjoyed seeing the new thread pop up with serial number info. I like how Tommy mentions the black cameras with "Definitely made" and "possibly made". (my earlier guesses about which ones were made in black were pretty close
)
Too bad they did not keep/preserve better records, but it is fun to research

Hi! I realize I'm answering a rather old post. But I saw your comments on the subject lens and was wondering if you're still using it, and how you like it? Is it still the lens you thought it was going to be?
Just curious! Take care!

I want to keep a record and share with you another fun project with a classic rangefinder. I have had experience in the past with the wonderful Canon series - namely the V, L, VI and 7 cameras. These are great shooters that are more affordable than the past (and present) German inspiration/competition cameras.
Without re-hashing the long and winding path that led to this set-up, here's what I've got: a L2 in black enamel. I have owned and used the L3 and L1 but never the L2 (not much different from either -but it is the lowest production of the three).
The black finish is not originalThat's OK- the price was right and the re-paint seemed to involve an overhaul--- smooth and like new in operation. Doubtful the L2 was ever offered in black... just the L1 (and of course, some of the other late cameras). Looks like the finish was applied over nickel or chrome -- not quite as romantic as brass--- we will see how sturdy the finish is in use.
Part of why I chose this camera is the viewfinder-- while not brightline, the three-position finder is good for my left-eyed shooting style (with glasses) and I plan to use just the 35mm lens pictured.
Speaking of the lens; it's the Kyoei W. Acall 35mm f3.5 It's a fairly cheap third party LTM wide angle with a decent reputation--- This is my second copy; owned my first years ago and had to sell it at some point. Missed it, liked it, took a long time to find another!
I admit, part of the lens appeal is the small size and handsome black finish

My plan is to get the lens cleaned up (needs a lube for the focus helical) and make sure it is syncing up properly with the camera body...
Shoot it! The camera is fairly stealthy and compact in this pairing and I plan to take it everywhere this fall...

The Kyoei Acall 35mm is a favorite - it's my only 35mm focal length ltm lens currently and it's usually stuck on the front of the Canon 7. Once in a while I wish it was a bit faster but I often just enjoy using it as a point and shoot with the depth of field scale on the barrel - fast and easy! Pick one up if you see it !

The L2 in black certainly looks beautiful. I recently picked up a chrome L2 and I'm blown away. I'd previously use a P and handled a 7 but found the combination of size and features just about perfect. As a wearer of glasses I'm delighted that I can see the small but bright 35mm viewfinder with great ease whilst wearing glasses. I can't see the 35mm frame lines on my M2 with glasses on. It's also the quietest LTM/M shutter I've encountered. Paired now with the Canon 35/2 ltm. A joy

I'd never used a Canon rangefinder until I bought this L2 from Al about a month ago. I call it my birthday camera because the camera and the Canon 35mm f1.8 were made the same time I was. It's a fun camera to shoot, and when it was repainted, it also got an overhaul and the shutter is sweet. Not the best picture, but shows what it is:

It's a good little picture making machine.
Best,
-Tim

Really like the L series canon rangefinders - they're all good - smooth, easy, solid!
