Canon Lens Hoods

Ok, my loot has started to arrive. I took possession of a nice user Canon 50/1.8 yesterday, and will be getting a 50/1.2 later this week. The 1.2 was miss classified on ebay, and well, my bid stuck under little competition. So, now I have to think about hoods and caps. Those high price 1.2 hoods seem to be available, but is there an option. Joe mentioned a Series VII hood I think, perhaps what I need to ask is to learn about these series hoods. So, what can I do for the 40mm 50/1.8? I need a front cap for it too, has anyone seen one of those? The 50/1.2 takes 55mm accessories, so that should be easier to deal with. I can see an ugly collapsible rubber hood in that lens's future.

Does anyone know what size push on lens cap will work on the 1.8? Maybe I will luck out with a generic for that too.

And no matter what people say, after a couple years here, I've only seen people selling equipment to get different equipment and sell it later to get yet different equipment 😀

I was tempted by the 50/1.2 myself but I'm not that good at critical focusing with that dof margins...

Btw, any 42mm snap on cap from a FSU lens will fit the 50/1.8.

hey rover, i missed that 1.2 completely.
for the 50/1.8 keep looking on ebay. either a canon series vi or a walz for canon series vi will work very nicely and they go for around 25 bucks mostly.

the 1.2 i have never investigated. but there is a seller on ebay that sells generic metal 55mm hoods. can't remember the name but there is almost always a hood available.

i had a extra for the 50 but i recently sold it. and i have 2 of the series vi hoods but i put one on the new 35 last night and i'm hoping it works w/o vignetting.

i'll keep my good eye open for one for you.

the push on work ok but i keep checking to make sure it hasn't fallen off and that's a pain.

I just got a 1.2 recently and the first results look promising. I am doing a comparison to my Summicron DR camparing Bokeh, sharpness and contrast. Will be posting later on. I got a snap-on Minolta hood for the 1.2. It is a hood made for the Hi-matic series rangefinders. type number D57KE. It reverses like Leica hoods, enabling a cap in front. The hood is almost straight cylindric and fits over the aperture ring when reversed.
The funniest bit if I mount the big 1.2 on my Minolta CLE and finish it with the Minolta cap...

Don't waste your time with the round Canon hood for the 50/1.8, very instrusive in the viewfinder. (Maybe it's OK with a Canon 7? But not on a II, III, or IV series.)

At least with a Canon RF camera, the rectangular Canon hoods (for 50/1.9 or 50/1.8) are the ones to use, beautifully vented. It just dissapears. They should come with a slip-on 42mm Series VI adapter, which you can adjust as tight as you desire. (The clamp-on 42mm adapter is more desirable, since it won't scratch the lens body, but quite rare.)

If you went the series adapter route with the 50/1.2, you would need to use Series VIII. I suspect that just this honker of a lens intrudes in the viewfinder, to mention any hood. That's why the Canon hood is so useful, but it is so pricey... Of course, the venting on the 50/1.2 hood is probably optimized for Canon P and Canon 7, not the bottom-load models.

FWIW, I am using an shade made for Olympus 55/1.2 for my Canon 50/1.2. It's a perfect match ;-)

Thanks guys, I have the hood Joe linked on my watch list. I will go look for the Olympus one, and that square one for the 1.8, though I know that there isn't a square one currently out there. We shall see what comes up for that lens.

I am hopeful that I will be able to go to the camera show near me on Sunday. These hoods and filters are the things that may be floating around there. I have to figure out how to put a yellow filter on my Iskra too. I found a lot that included a Series V hood which fits the Iskra, but now I have to get a filter that will slip into that little hood.
