Canon ltm 50mm f1.8

A few weeks ago I purchased this lens from Jim Buchanan who had overhauled this lend and put it up for sale in the classifieds.

I have just developed and scanned the first 2 rolls I have shot with it and am very pleased with the results. The out of focus is very nice. Unlike the 1.2 and 1.4 versions of this lens where it often renders in harsh circles I find that this lens keeps the shapes soft and recognizable till they blur into infinity.

An other nice bonus is that this lens very very compact making it easy to travel with and attract less unwanted attention.

Only thing I did not like but removed within the very first minute of ownership is the infinity lock.

errgh...GAS build-up... Just curious, what is the average price of this lens in excellent user condition (non-collector grade)? 😉 And are they hard to find?

I just sold mine for $200. Glass was mint, focus smooth, and aperture clean.

Very nice shots, Rogier! The prices of the Canon 50/1.8 LTM have crept up over the last year or so to around the $200 range for a clean copy. Check out the review on Dante Stella's website, in the article on Canon lenses for Leica.

Super-glue some plastic in the catch for the infinity lock (disabling the latch), then you can put the button back and not risk losing it.

Raid, your Canon 50/1.8 looks a little dim; some haze perhaps? That look is not my experience with that lens at all. I found it shockingly crisp. I sold mine perhaps eight months ago for about $180. It was in excellent shape. Isn't there something about the black ones being later and somehow more desirable than the all chrome ones? Or is it vice versa?

This photo session was done in low light beside a window, and all lenses used showed such dimness.
I had my lens recently cleaned, but I have two of them. Maybe the one used here needs cleaning for haze removal? No clue.
The images in the lens comparison are tiny crops from the images.

Shot with a Canon 50mm f1.8 (later black and silver version) on a Canon P, I believe. One of my favorite photographs ever, of my daughter Zora on the walk to school.

Another favorite shot with this combo.

These lenses used to be so cheap and unloved. I'm glad they are loved now, but not so much about the end of the first part!
