I have a Canon selenium light meter that fits my Canon P among others that still responds to light but is not accurate. I think it would be fun to have it repaired and I know that Quality Light Metrics in southern California used to repair various light meters but I can't find any contact info for them. Has anyone on the forum used them recently and if so could you share their contact info? Many thanks,

Rick d.

Here's their phone number: 323-467-2265, georgepmilton@worldnet.att.net. I have a meter I have been meaning to send to them but I have not used them myself. I understand they're pretty quick.

As I'm sure you know, it might simply be that your selenium cell is losing sensitivity -- and getting a new meter cell just might not be cost-effective (if that's something they even do).

Thanks so much. I just talked to George and he is unsure whether or not the meter can be repaired. He asked me to send him photos of the meter and he would let me know. I'll post his response when he has examined the photos.

I received an e-mail response from George at Quality Light Metric and he feels confident that he can replace the selenium cell in the meter and calibrate it for somewhere between $58 and $78 so off it goes.

The Canon Meter is a joy to use and I found mine reliable even with color film. I like every meter which don't need batteries, of course not for "moonlight" usage. Good news that they can be overhauled.

I just received the meter back from Quality Light Metric. George found that the selenium cell was still very strong. The needle pivot and hair spring were dirty and it needed a minor zero adjustment and a good cleaning of the Hi-Lo range switch. The meter is now working well. Repair cost was $58. George tells me that he has GE selenium cells that will work in these meters if cell replacement is necessary. In that case repair cost would be $78.

Wow, that's great to know. Mine seems to be pretty accurate, but based on its responsiveness I think there's probably some dirt or a dodgy contact in there.

I need to send him a Leica meter; maybe I'll send the Canon meter as well.
