I recently picked up a Canon P with a Leica 50mm f/2.8 Summicron collapsible lens. I have read, on Stephen Gandy's site, that I shouldn't be collapsing the lens into the body, but the camera came with that lens and it seems to be working just fine. No spacing issues, exposures good, everything works. Since i was using the lens before reading the warning and nothing has happened, can I assume it is OK to collapse the lens, or is there some kind of a gotcha here? The shutter curtains are unwrinkled and I want to keep them that way. Lovely outfit, BTW.

Thank you to all who reply.

With best regards,

The issue with collapsibles on the P is the light baffle in front of the curtains. Most collapsibles will not clear the baffle, and thus will not collapse all the way into the body. Open the shutter with the Bulb setting and look through the opening from behind while collapsing the lens - you will see where the barrel contacts the light baffle.

The other thing you need to watch out for is when mounting lenses longer than the 50mm, you need to set them at close-focus so as not to damage the rangefinder follower cam.

That's what I thought. Are we talking 50/2.8 Elmar or 50/2 Summicron.

Either way, I hear its sometimes possible to collapse certain lenses without issue. I don't have a P, so I can't try it out and see.

It is so easy to damage the curtains on Canon RF's that I would take the cautious route in any event. Elmar or whatever.

No matter what lens we're talking about, none of them have a barrel long enough to reach the curtains. It's simply not an issue.

FWIW, the only lenses that will collapse fully on a P are those with smaller barrels, such as the Elmar 50/3.5 and the Canon 50/3.5. I haven't checked the Summar, but I suspect it might as well. EDIT: The Summar will collapse into a P. It's very close to the baffle, but it fits.

As suggested, you can mount the lens, open the camera back, keep the shutter open on B, and watch what happens as you collapse the lens.
