Brian Sweeney said:Joe,
Have you seen the Grip-bubble-level thing that screws into the tripod socket that Canon made original to the L1? If not, I can post a picture of it.
I don't know what they made for the L1, but the 'Camera Holder V' accessory I have (for V and VI models) wouldn't work with the P -- the casting is the right size to hold the body, but the holder's tripod screw is at the wrong end vs. the camera's tripod socket.
Maybe they made a different model for the P, but I'm not sure this would make a good handgrip anyway -- it's not very hand-friendly, since it was made for improving the balance of a tripod-mounted camera and has angular square protrusions sticking out where the tripod "foot" attaches to the main body of the holder.
However, the P would be a good candidate for a DIY grip since (unlike the V and VI) the tripod socket is on the advance-lever end; assuming you want a right-hand grip, you probably could haggle one together out of a piece of hardware-store "mending plate" (metal strip for the base) and a length of hardwood dowel (for the grip handle.) Cut the mending plate to length, file the ends to match the contours of the camera body and the dowel, drill two 5/16" holes in it, line it with some cork, screw the dowel to one end via one hole, and run a spare case-attaching screw through the other hole to secure it to the camera body.
Of course, the result would be unbelievably, hideously ugly -- at least it would if I made it, everything I make turns out that way -- but it would give you a better grip and provide valuable theft protection... at least from other RFF members, who would run screaming at the sight of the ghastly thing you had grafted onto your once-elegant P!

Well, one of the new silver M grips from Eric Paulsen at www.photoequip.net is coming this way
Eric told me the grip could probably fit the P and only need small adjustment to fill the loose space (the Leica M base is wider). He even sent me the parcel via Fedex at no additional cost ! There's a full refund warranty if it doesn't fit, so I'm only risking shipping costs.
Also, I ordered what seemed to be their last NF grip to use it with Brian's F2, but this is SLR
I'll let you all know how the P grip story ends...

Looks pretty good, Oscar... Nice touch to put the grip's own tripod mounting spot at the lens centerline.

Hehe, indeed they arrived in 3 days to Spain !
But they are still stopped at customs !
I called them, and probably I'll have to pay 20 euros or so as custom fees, it was great from Eric to send them the faster way possible but this proves that it's USPS or nothing.
I'm expecting delivery soon, maybe today, maybe tomorrow afternoon.
Sniff...

Well, after a quick call, the fedex parcel is already at home, in the end, 28 euros for customs on a less than 100 euros purchase, yeah, gotta love the government !
Monetary pains aside, I'll keep you posted as how (or if) they fit the P and the (heresy!) Nikon F2.

Yeeeeeah !!!
Yeeeeeah !!!
Yeeeees man !
Joe, start preparing some bucks, the Photo Equip new Leica-M grip fits both the Canon P and 7 almost perfectly! There's only a slight difference in the baseplate width that makes the grip move just a bit back and forth, but it's a LOT less than what I expected, probably around 1 mm or so of difference in the center and around 2-3mm in the corner (the handle is a bit more separated than it would be on a M, I guess) so if you adjust it firmly enough it won't move at all, so it's completely useable without any adjustment !
And if you prefer to fill the small gap, just some cardboard or thin plastic shim will do. The silver one looks beautiful on the P (damn I don't have a proper digital P&S) so I'm glad Eric only had silver ones. Fits the 7 without problems as well but makes its profile a bit taller, something the 7 doesn't need
If you like to carry your camera in your hand I bet you'll love them, the grip it provides is very comfortable and the aluminium satin finish is really nice.
Also received one of their old black ones for the Nikon F2, and man does the handling improve with it ! I'm probably asking them about their universal one for my SRT and who knows if for another M in black
The price was also very good, $66 per grip, and Eric is really a great guy to deal with so I really recommend him, you Leica M shooters may also find useful their add-on rewind attachments and other gadgets.
All in all, I couldn't think on a better finding after a so-so morning !

both joy and dread fill my heart!
i'm glad it fits and i want one too.
but i will never be able to save any money at this rate of spending.
i think i'll order one to start on one p and then maybe for the other 2 canons later on.
with a nice grip and a wrist starp i'll be in shooter heaven.
joe
oscar, where's the ordering info again?

OF it ? Nope, I was tampering with my small digi P&S the other day and now I don't remember where I put it
WITH it, yes, sure
The small gap due to baseplate difference with the M, I simply filled it with a flattened cotton swab stick that stays in place by pressure, no glue, no tape, no mod. needed that could ruin the grip for use on a M, nothing, it simply fits firmly in place, flat and simple

i'm thinking a thin sheet of some rubbery material might work also and help with the grip's grip.

I am thinking about finding a grip for the M6 now. That sucker is heavy and it is hard to get a hold of with its smooth lines and stuff. I felt like I was going to drop it today.

let's grip !
joe i saw one of the old photoequip leica m grips the other day on pn, the owner simply put some tape with a rubber surface on the grip zone, fast and simple.
now, with -24ºC outside in edmonton, it may be a good idea for you to save your fingers
