Canon P lug wearing away

Anyone having this problem, on the P or any other camera? I'm using a Gordy sling.

My M2's lug hole is being slowly worn out as well from the gordys strap. It's from the bits that open up. The metal is sharp and eats away at the lugs.
 
Just about any steel split ring will wear the softer metal of the lug. It's the constant movement.
Many years ago Nikon began putting a steel insert in theirs.
A simple fix is to get some brass tube from the local hobby emporium to fit and epoxy it in place.

Could you explain how this works please?
 
great suggestion Brian! I'll try this on my M2

Oddly enough, Fuji had lug wear problems on their original x100 (also due to triangular strap ends). On the x100s, the lug holes are reinforced.
 
Having the lugs replaced (preferably with stainless steel) by a competent repairer has never cost me much. I've had it done on Nikon Fs and Leica Ms: dunno about Canons.

Consider replacing the split rings with short loops of rawhide
(or leather boot lacing) roughly 5' long... No wear, and quiet, too.

This has the added advantage of removing the strap itself from your grip.
 
Thanks a lot, Brian! I was thinking of going to the hardware store and get something similar to rivets and see how to push them through the lugs in my Nikon S2 (the holes look very worn), but your fix seems cheaper and nicer.

Of course. But I’d rather prevention (such as my fix and the others that have been mentioned) than a cure that involves expense and a camera away and out of use while it’s being fixed.

The real issue for me are the manufacturers who are too idle/unthinking/penny pinching to provide decent lugs that don’t wear unnecessarily. It’s not rocket science. :bang:

A case in point are the brass lugs on my ‘Millennium’ black paint M6 TTL – but then perhaps, Leica didn’t envisage someone like me who uses it as their main camera on a weekly, sometimes daily basis.

Incidentally, my present ‘inserts’ have been in place three years, and are still holding up well with little sign of wear.

Dear Brian,

Fair enough but when I've had it done (which hasn't been for years) it's only been a couple of days out of circulation and I've had other cameras to use.

By now the lug is worn down enough that I'd be quite reluctant to trust rawhide or leather on it —*I was considering this yesterday.

Gordy's sling and leicagoodies' sling are two completely different designs. I don't doubt the leicagoodies sling wouldn't wear the lug.

I'll have to ask about having this done when I'm back in HK. For now I'll try to put some tubing in there.
